New hardware install and now I have no DVD drives

OK. I am thoroughly perplexed, and I don't know what to do fix the problem.

I got a Sylvania F96 19" CRT monitor and an Epson EPL-5700i laser printer from my uncle about three days ago. He was going to get rid of them, so I rescued them.

However, after installing them both, I've completely lost both of my DVD drives. They don't show up in 'my computer.' Although the device manager shows them both, they both give me the same error message:

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

Trying to reinstall the drivers is useless, because the driver software doesn't recognize the drive to start with.

Anyone out there in MajorGeek world know how to fix this?

    Thanks in advance,

    Chris

how are you trying to reinstall the drivers? have you uninstalled the drivers from device manager, and let them reinstall on reboot? how about any installation discs? i'm only asking so that you can provide more details.

I did try to uninstall them from the device manager, and then attempted to reinstall them with the driver software that I found on their respective companies websites, but they do not recognize that the drives even exist, so the installation halts before it even gets anywhere.

Is rebooting after the uninstallation going to make a difference?

Yes, I did. That appeared to be my only option, since the original drivers and such that came with the drives are on a CD. Since the system isn't recognizing my drives to begin with, I was a bit frustrated.

It took a moment of consideration before I realized what I was about to attempt: "The computer isn't recognizing my DVD drives? Well, I'll just pop the cd in and reinstall the driv....nevermind." :)

Does your drives work? Will they read? Try uninstalling drivers from device manager and restart, see what happens on reboot. ed

typically you uninstall the drivers from device manager, reboot, and it will try and reinstall the drivers upon bootup.

have you nosed around your bios settings and see if there is anything there you can see/edit?
