I have a Dimension 4700. I am running Windows XP Service Pak 3
I have been having problems everytime I plug in a USB stick more then one port is opened when I go to unplug it I have to search for the right one that I want to stop running after chosing they all go away but sometimes I have to close out the others just to make them go away.
Now the new hardware device comes up saying that a new device has been plugged in and it needs to find the drive for it. But I have not plugged anything new in. except for using usb sticks
When I try to let it search for the drivet that it needs it tells me that it can not be found and that the hardware might not run properly. What do I do to get this to stop poping up?

Normally, USB drivers would be installed when the OS is installed. You may just have to install the USB drivers. First, let's find out if the drivers are the problem. Right click My Computer>properties>hardware>device manager. Do you have a yellow exclaimation mark, or red X next to anything? Particulary the 'Universal Serial Bus Controller.' Let me know and we can take it from there;)

Thank you Stubby for getting back with me.
Yes I do have a yellow guestion mark that is beside other devices then under that there is aldo another question mark with USB Device. Now last night I had found somethingon here about deleteing that I did but it came right back. So it is there again this morning. Also when I went to the sieral port to check there is several port hubs and massive storeage device labeled. I thought that if they had nothing in them that they where not suppose to be opened or at least showing up.
    thank you again

I did a little research while waiting for you to get back to me, which happened quicker than I thought;) There are 2 ways we can go here; first we can re-install the newer chipset drivers for your Intel chipset and, secondly we can re-install the USB drivers. Personally, I'd do both. Chipset drivers first, before USB! Now, where to get the drivers, man I thought you'd never ask:-D Here are the chipset drivers http://support.dell.com/support/dow...WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=&SystemID=DIM_P4_4700 In that list that appears you'll see 'chipset,' click on the '+' sign and download those and install. You'll need to re-boot in order for them to take effect. Before going to USB, check and see if that may have solved your problem, if not then. Secondly USB. Go to the same page and on the left hand side you'll see "Support by Topic" and click on Win XP. When you get to that page, a little ways down, you'll see 'USB,' click on it and follow the instructions. Let me know how it comes out.

Any other questions pertaining to this problem, you can post in this thread. However, any different problems not having to do with what we're working on it would be better to start another thread. That way more people will see it and offer help. Yeah, I live in Brandon, MS and have lived in MS for close to 25 years. I'm originally from Pa. and even though I've lived here 25 years, I'm still considered a 'Damn Yankee!':-D Man, you Southerners sure hold a grudge for a loooong time, don't ya:confusedroflmao I've got to go pick-up my son, but I'll get back to ya a little later. Good Luck, and let me know how you make out!

I did the chip reinstall and then went to the USB thingy and it really didn't help so what I did was called the scandisk support ask them could this be something wrong with there products that I was using we checked it by unplugging every usb cable then put the stick in the front port and copied a file over to it. It worked fine so he told me that it was some other cable problem so I connected each one back in and found that my converter box by Amazing designs drivers had to be replaced. How and why that needed to be done bets me.
But then I started replace my documents that I had on usb ports and now my computer is sluggish uploading form the start and while using internet explore with google and gmail. Not sure what do to or what I did wrong.
Now when I reinstalled the chips it told me that there was ones already there did I want to replace them with the new ones (each one came up seprately) and I clicked yes
Could I have done a major no no here?

Hi Again! Since you re-installed the chipset drivers and followed those instructions at Dell site concerning the USB, have you checked your device manager to see if those yellow marks have gone away, or are they still there? When you mentioned 'chip' drivers', are you refering to the chipset drivers? Have you been asked again to re-install 'new' drivers once you did it the first time and you said yes? Let me know. In the meantime, let me do a bit more research on this, because I'm beginning to think that you may have to first remove the older drivers before installing the newer ones. But no, you didn't pull a major No-No!!

    Hi

In Device Manager you have no yellow ! marks do you and if so what? if you have any then do tell us what and dont continue with the below.

Could you also tell us all the other USB hardware you have plugged in, eg mouse, keyboard, printer etc, as sometimes OEM PCs as in Dells, HPs etc dont have enough power in the PSU to run multiple USB devices. Also if you have upgraded this PC in any way as in new Graphic Card, Extra HDDs?

If you have no yellow ! marks then open device manager and open the USB Serial Bus Controller branch, click the + to do this, then plug in one of your USB pens and it should list as USB Mass Storage Device, right click this and choose Uninstall and follow the prompts, then unplug the USB pen and re-pug it back in, Windows will re-install the driver.

See how you go with one drive only, if it works then try the others in the same method.

If that doesnt work then scan for malware and use this guide and if any found then start a new thread in out malware area of the forum and attach the logs gained.
