New HD for emachine - Partition ??

Don't know if this is some of my DVD / CD-Rom problems, but I did install a new HD and did all of the updates. When Windows Xp asked on install about partitions - I said yes. I was assuming that it would make a normal C drive ; a small partition for D ( DVD I am assuming ) and the E drive. I have ended up w/ 1 drive and am having problems backing my data up using MS Live Onecare. I can burn CD for music and I still can not play movies after downloading software. I was thinking maybe the 1 partitions might be the problem. I was wanting to fix this hand me down laptop for the experience, but its being a pain. I know that I can download games and play them - if that helps @ all. On my other computer in the computer Mgt. it shows the HD in 2 partitions ( C: 88GB NTFS ) ( D: 4GB FAT ) & then E ( CD-Rom/DVD ).Thanks if anyone can help. I had an old Partition Magic , but I lost the Code.
