My hard drive recently crashed so I got a new one, re-installed my operating system (XP Home) and now I can get to my desk top which is a huge plus from before, but sound doesn't work, I can't get on the internet via LAN and my desktop icons are blinding me they're so huge. I'm assuming all these are driver isssues? Please help

I don't have any other info at this point as far as PC specs, etc until later.

    Thank you in advance

Yes, sounds like you need to reinstall all our drivers (video, LAN, Modem, sound, etc.).

If they are not on a CD that come with your PC then you have to go to the manufacturers website (PC or MOBO) and download them. Since you can't do it from that PC you will from one that can get to the internet. Save them to a Thumb drive or burn a CD and install them one at a time.

Do you have a list of all drivers I will need? I can get everything from the Dell website, but I don't want to download drivers I won't need. I guess it wouldn't hurt to download them all...or would it..

Also, once I have them on my flash drive and plug it in to the problem PC what do I do then? Just double click on the drivers and they will install? Is there a perticular place on the PC I'm suppose to download them to, or will they find their rightful home on their own?

    Thanks again!

It wouldn't hurt to download all the drivers from the manufactures site since you obviously don't have any. Just make sure they are the drivers for your particular model PC or MOBO. As for installing them, they usually have a default location, so that should be no problem. When you click on a driver to install, it'll give you a location, just click ok and they will find their way home!:-D

Also, it may be a good idea to download the driver I will need so I can access the internet..this way i can download all the drivers via the problem PC directly onto the problem PC. I'm just really not sure as to what driver I need that would allow me to access the internt. please help! thanks

I've been reading some threads and it looks like an Everest log will help with getting the proper info for drivers. I'm going to post an Everest log shortly.

Great idea about the Everest log. I've gone over that link you posted, but I'll wait until I can see the Everest log. However, you were right about one thing...the BIOS!! Let's leave that one alone for now!!;)

Attached is the Everlast report. Also, on the Dell link I sent you I downloaded the Audio driver from there cause there was only one option. That worked, I now have audio on the problem PC. If you can point me to the other drivers I need to move forward that would be great, especially the ethernet one. Thanks! :dood

Okay, let's get started! First off video. I noticed that, in Everest, it is already enabled in the BIOS and using your link to Dell, here's your vid drivers http://support.dell.com/support/dow...-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=6&fileid=104486

    Next, communications drivers http://support.dell.com/support/dow...-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=20&fileid=94122

    Next, chipset drivers http://support.dell.com/support/dow...-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=27&fileid=70069

Next, audio. Never mind!!:-o That should pretty much take care of it. If you have any problems, just post back. BTW, those links are directly to the driver itself, and that pretty much takes the guess work out of it for you. Good Luck!!

"that pretty much takes the guess work out of it for you"...well put. That's exactly what I'm after. Thanks again..If I have any other issues I will post again.

The video driver obviously worked because my desktop is back to normal. Not sure what the other ones were for. Unfortunatley, I'm still unable to get on the internet. In my device manager I have a yellow mark next to:

ethernet controller & universal serial bus controller

Also, I'm trying to install my Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 and it's telling me my operating system doesn't support it? I have XP Home so I'm assuming it's an issue with some drivers or maybe an OS update...Please advise, thanks again

Ok, I got everything to work properly. My device manager has no issues. One more problem I can't seem to figure out...My number keys don't work on the right hand side of the keyboard, but the top ones do. This isn't a keyboard issue. It's really annoying, anybody out there that can help? Please?! Thanks

:confused Have you tried the numlock key?

There are 2 keyboard drivers at the Dell site for the Optiplex 170N:
    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=17&fileid=197324
http://support.dell.com/support/dow...1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=17&fileid=108704 (use this one if you have a USB keyboard)
Dell also has a 'desktop system support' driver that has added USB support, maybe it will help:
    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=7&fileid=161321

Glad to hear that everything is up and running as it should be. Didn't mean to leave you in a lurch, but I've been gone the past few days to the 'Huntsville Space Center' with 102 Cub Scouts and their parents!! That's one field trip I'll never forget!! Still, I'm glad your machine is as it should be!!;)
