    Good Morning all

I have an interesting situation. I have a Dell OptiPlex GX240. I recently acquired the Aurora/Nail.exe virus, and cant seen to get rid of it. I use this computer to run my family business so I did not want to format and reload.

What I did was bought a new drive and put it in another computer (A generic $500 DVD media center type) formatted the HD loaded XP, SP2 and then moved all my files from one computer to another, QuickBooks, ect. What I wanted to do was take this fresh install HD and put it back into the DELL and there problems solved I can keep the old drive just in case I missed something.

Problem: As soon as I put the new Maxtor HD into the Dell. I got a blue screen (flashed for 1 sec) and It restarted. I removed everything in the back except the keyboard and the monitor and It still errored and rebooted. Why doesn’t the Dell like the new HD?

From the information I have gathered. I can not transplant a HD from one ocmputer to another. So if i do a repair of the HD on the Dell will it sync up with the Dell Box?

I think you kind of answered your question yourself!!

Whenever you put a drive in a different system where windows has been installed onto it on a different system....you have to do a repair installation of that windows!!

When you install windows onto a hard drive that is in system "a"...it loads and installs the necessary drivers for system "a"...then you move it to system "b" ...the drivers loaded for system "a" will clash with system "b"!! So doing a repair install of windows...once you get the drive into system "b"...will allow windows to load and install the drivers needed for the new system that that drive is in and therefore should reslove your issues!!

When you do a repair install of windows...it deletes all of the windows files, only, without touching any of the other stuff on the drive...then it will reinstall windows right over where the previous windows was...once again...while not touching anything else!! 9 times out of 10...this will resolve your problem!! If not...put the drive into another system as a slave...back up all the pertinent files...then put the drive back into the system it will stay in as the primary drive...then do a format and a new install of windows...and then you will have reload any of the programs and important files!!

Do you know how to do a repair install...if so you should be good to go...if not...make sure and ask any questions you have before attempting...to make sure you don't accidentally format the drive and lose everything!! Just so you know...it really isn't that big of a deal!!

Let me know if you have any other questions!!

By the way...when you set up a new drive and transfer stuff from an old drive...you can only just "MOVE" files...all the programs themselves will have to be "INSTALLED" on the new drive!! The only way you can just simply move programs from one drive to another is if you "MIRROR" the drive!! However...that involves the ENTIRE drive...windows and all...and ofcourse that will put you right back to square one with your whole reason of this particular project!!

Oh one more question Roger. When i do a clean Install do I loose the users. I have them set up the way I like them. Will I have to start from scratch?

    Michael

    Thank you again.

When you do a clean or repair install...it will be taken back to a fresh start on everything!! You will have to go through the whole setup process and EVERYTHING!!
