My kids dropped my shop laptop and smashed the DC plug to pieces, when this went back it also knocked off a surface mount 8 pin chip just behind the Positive center pin. I need to find out what this chip component is, so I can order it and replace it. I use an ACER 9410Z I already took it apart and fixed the power issue but without that chip component I can't recharge the battery. I work on electronics as well, just not laptops. I could also find a replacement if I knew what the circuit is doing. Of course ACER is no help if it is just a line conditioner, fillter caps, diode pack, or something like that I could just jumper around it. Pins 5,6,7, are tied to the circuit board run feeding from the center pin of the DC plug if that helps. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm far from an expert in electronics, but if you have the old chip, I would think you can simply get the numbers off the top of the chip. But if not, I think it's a voltage regulator or line conditioner... I'm sure that "voltage regulator" isn't the precise terminology, but you get the idea....

Thanks for the imput you are correct about using the chip but I think it must have fallen out of the hole created in the plastic and possible my wife vacuumed it up. So, I don't have the chip as reference, that is why I was hoping to find someone here that has knowledge on this. I have contacted three online stores that sell the motherboard and ask them if they could look at it and tell me the number but abviously they want me to buy the entire motherboard. The other thing I tried to do was find a picture via the net and zoom in on it but none I have found have good enough definition.

Here is the chip I need sorry the pic is so blurry and an additional picture of the board for reference. The center pin runs between 19VDC and 20.5VDC, you can see that pins 567 lead to the center pin of the DC plug. This might even be a switch, but I was hoping someone with knowledge of this circuit could chime in.

I have the repair manual but there are no schematics in it and no parts list for the board population or BOM.

i think i have the solution to your ic trouble.

we had the same kind of accident only i had the luck of finding the ic that broke of.
the 2 ic's are both from Alpha Omega inc. the one we need is ic AO4425
(at alpha Omega site you can download a pdf with the spec's)

after searching for months i even found a company which sells them per piece. i ordered 3 of 'em but i don't get any response and for some strange reason i can't find their email!!
The price is a dollar. and the company name is time sensitive inc (or something) and they sell it on ebay. it looks sort of trustworthy (let me know what you think) BTW you've got to promise me that you'll send me a piece or two!

may i ask how you "hot wired it" / "bypassed the ic" so to speak?
