Hi! I have scoured this website all weekend and have yet to find my specific question, therefore, I registered today so I can post my situation. If there is already an answer here, please direct me and I will be glad to follow it.

Last Tuesday, my laptop got hit with the Ramnit virus/worm despite running Norton 360. All the icons and start toolbar disappeared but my background photo stayed. By running task manager, I was successful in removing all the viruses (had 15) and removed spyware (12 trojans) with Norton 360 and Spybots S&D. I was able to connect to the internet (also going through task manager) and downloaded Windows Security Essentials, Windows Anti-Malware and Glary Utilities. All three of these programs cleaned even more virus, spyware and broken registries. I was able to access my files (through task manager) and back up to google docs online, because I wasn't able to save them to a jump drive.

Now that I have cleaned everything, my desktop icons and start menu toolbar are still missing. Unfortunately, I don't have a Windows XP startup disc. I was able to burn a Dell OS PC Recovery disc from my desktop and tried to install on my Dell laptop, but no success. It didn't even start running the disc. I have tried going through the DOS command window but the Recovery Console isn't listed.

One odd note, when I go through task manager and click browse files, I see all the same icons as I normally would in any windows dialog box, EXCEPT for the "My Computer" icon. It looks like a blank white sheet with multicolor dots.

What is my next step? I appreciate and thank you in advance. :)

Sounds like you ain't got rid of everything, and to be honest with you there is a procedure to go through to clear everything out click this link http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=208809 and follow the instructions by the book and i can assure you you will then get sorted properly, as adware /spyware and all the rest of the crap you pick up along the way can hide itself really deep inside your PC !

    Good Luck Rusty ! ;)

P.S read somewhere that you should try and identify sysu.exe in the processes list, if it's there get rid

I worked through each step given in the Read & Run First link. I have attached my logs. Unfortunately, due to my icons and start menu bar missing, I was unable to enable viewing of hidden files, system files and file extensions. I hope someone can give me some next steps direction. Thank you so very much!

Thank you for your link to Read & Run! I just did the same steps on my Home desktop computer and freed up 1.4 GB of space that was deeply hidden malware files. I was shocked since I run AV and spybots religiously. Thank you for these steps...it's like I have a new computer again since it's running faster. :)
