OK! so i have been talking to online tech support for over an hour now and we are getting nowhere..... A client of mine gave me the laptop.

    pavilion 5020US .....

I turn the computer on and it goes to "HP LOGO" (press esc to bio's ect.ect.)"SPLASH SCREEN" ... then BOOM turns off... does not restart just off... i am getting FAN's turning on.... Processor light..... i take the battery out and try it same thing. voltage is correct.

Put in DDR PC 2700 256RAM (2 sticks)
    new 80 gig hard drive..

    nothing same thing.

i am stuck.. could not think of anything else to do... it just turns off at boot screen. i am looking at the box it came in and there is a spare keyboard (i know laptops do not come with spare keyboards) so i dont know if it were changed. would this cause it not to start up? the keyboard in the laptop right now is correct and fully working no stuck keys or broken keys and fits perfect. same model number as what's in the box ....

    any help would be great

    thanks
    Ben

I presume by the "Splash Screen" you mean the Windows screen. If so it is loading drivers at this point. So have you tried to get it to boot in Safe Mode?

If this is happening before the OS has started to load my suspicion would fall on the Power supply.

You could try unplugging everything (ie CD/DVD drives, floppy drive) in the PC except the HD and see if it boots then.

On most laptops the drives are just held in by either a clip or a single screw and then they just slide out. Try just removing the battery first and running direct from the power supply though.
