    Hi,

    I'm new to the forum.
We have a Gateway PC running Windows XP.
My daughter just shut the power off while it was still shutting down.
Now the PC won't boot up. I am at work now and will look at it when I get home.
She says the screen comes up asking what mode you want to start up in:
Safe Mode, Safe Mode with command propmt, last know good configuration...

I had her try safe mode and last know good configuration. Neither worked.
It just goes back to the screen asking what mode do you want to start up in.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem ?

    Thank you.

I know I have a recovery CD from my other PC (HP w/ Windows XP).

Could I use that cd to fix this problem ?

Probably not, as gateway will have its own drivers, etc and hp may not be recognized .....if you don't have a recovery disc for the gateway, would suggest contacting gateway, explain situation and they will probably send you one.

I just remembered Gateway has Windows XP Media, HP has just XP.
Is there anything else I could try besides using the Recovery CD ?

If it is in a loop ...you will need a os disk ..either recovery or full installation disc.

Do you know if Gateway normally includes the recovery cd ?
If not, is it downloadable from their website ?

Gateway didn't come with recovery cd. It comes with blank discs for you to make your own.

I'm on the phone with CS. They had me hit pf11 which brought up a restore screen. But it was a full restore (destructive) only.

The booklet that came with the blank discs to make recovery cd's says that if you use the recovery cd's you can do a full restore (destructive) or with backup.

The CS is checking if he can send me the recovery cd for free.

Gateway is sending me the recovery cd for free.
Is there a repair option on the recovery cd ?

It will do a "full restore" as in all that crap that came pre-installed ...but with the option to do a backup of your files and settings ...so you will not loose your stuff...just have to remove all the crap again, reinstall the programs you've installed and transfer your files back to the programs. But it beats wiping it all.:)

I was hoping just to repair it like my HP.
At least I won't loose my data.

    About transferring files back:

It will create a backup folder called Mybackup.
Will it retain all of the folder names in MYbackup folder such as My Documents/My Pictures/Christmas 2001 or will all the folder names be erased and every file be under Mybackup ?

    Thanks.

everything should be saved. Its no different that transferring settings between 2 pcs on XP's built system transfer program.

I know it will be saved but will it put everything under one folder that I then have to move files individually to folders.

Will all of my folders still be in tact under MYBACKUP folder ?

I just tried the recovery cd and it doesn't give you the option of backing up my files !

Does anyone know of anyway to run a chkdsk or for me to backup my files ?
