Hello all, first post. Need some help. Am running an HP PCm1050e media pc. Just ordered and hooked up a HP Photosmart 3210 All in One printer. Orderded new printer since the old one stopped working and we wanted to upgrade. I have installed and reinstalled the 3210 drivers several times to no avail. It will not print. I just noticed now that my hp personal media drive cannot be accessed. It is also a usb connected device. I have checked the system and it looks like I the drivers for USB 2 are not there? But I am not that fluent in USB2 drivers to know. I did not see the word "enhanced" by the usb elements list. So problem is a) old printer stopped working, b) new printer bought - it will not print. c) noticed that other usb device - personal media drive cannot be accessed. d) am thinking that somehow usb ports wacked. e) Mouse and keyboards working - which are also usb ports : and I have switched usb ports for printer. Help please. thanks

Have you checked in the bios to make sure ALL USB ports are enabled?

right click on my computer and then click properties > when the poperties window opens click on the hardware tab at the top of the window > now click on device manager. it should bring up a list of hardware on your system. do any of them have a little exclamation mark next to them?

if there is one by universal serial bus controllers, double click on it and select the driver tab then click update driver. it should automatically search for the driver and install it.

Be sure to have at least service pack 1 installed for USB2 to work. That probably won't fix it since the printer should work fine under USB1.1 to. If your USB ports are on a PCI card, try removing it from the PCI slot and then put it back in.
This worked for me once, since the card wasn't properly fitted in the slot. It came loose for some reason and i still don't know why.

Thanks for the suggestions. I find no exclamation marks and I went to each usb item and clicked the "update" driver button. All were current with no new updates suggested. But not sure if the update routine is really working? since the software churns and comes back with an answer. The update search appears to be local????
***The device manager shows TWO items, usb items that are unknown devices. So I wonder if these two are the printer and usb storage drive that are not recognized? Not sure what to do next.
    a) Not sure how to check if I have service pack 1 installed? how can I check?
    b) How do I check the bios to see if they are activated?

    thanks in advance. Leo

To check for SP1/SP2, right click on 'My computer' and select properties. If you have either one installed, it should say so in the system section. Screenshot
How you can check if they are enabled depends on your BIOS. It should be listed somewhere under peripherals or pci devices.

Thanks for help on sp1 or 2. I have sp2. New info. I checked the bios and usb's are on. Also I upgraded to the latest bios for my HP media pc m1050e. This did not fix the issue. I have more definition on the issue.

    a) When you plug the printer usb cable in, windows sees the connection but comes up with the following error. "USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED- ONE OF THE USB DEVICES ATTACHED TO THIS COMPUTER HAS MALFUNCTIONED AND WINDOWS DOES NOT RECOGNIZE IT ".

    b) I have tried swapping the usb plug to four different usb ports and the same error shows up for the new printer. Also my hp personal media drive which is usb shows the same error message as above.

    c) The usb keyboard and usb mouse in the same usb ports do not show the issue. I guess these have their own built in usb drivers.

    d) I contacted hp online help and worked with tech for about 45 minutes. He had me look at the device drivers in the usb device manager.

    e) Their were NO "!" marks indicating issues. But there were two devices listed as UNKNOWN. These two devices are my new printer and my usb disk drive.

    f) The hp technician had me delete the two "unknown" usb devices as well as the USB composite device.

The I rebooted with the printer and usb disk drive not connected.

BUT this did not fix the issue. The HP tech says I need to contact the pc vendor (hp!) and have the USB ports un-installed and re-installed. At that time it was late and I stopped worked on the unit.

    Help....what next do I do?

Leo......just to eliminate the printer issue, do you or a friend have another computer you could test the printer on? If it works okay, I would contact HP as suggested and ask them for advice on your USB port installation, or maybe someone in the hardware forum could help you with this process.

Anyone suggest that maybe the power supply is not sufficient to run these items?
Have you tried a pci usb?
