I bought myself a new piece of hardware it's called Devolo Dlan and it uses the electrical wiring in the house to transfer your internet to any place in the house without the need for a router.

i have only had it for 3 days so a bit limited on performance details.

i have found it to be just a tiny bit slower than my router for downloading (but still fast enough to watch video's.)

what is the best thing is i can take my wireless signal out of the system and have no problems with unauthorized use of my internet (unless they plug into my house)

    Interesting.
I've used somewhat similar devices to carry phone lines through my house wiring.
A novel way to thwart driveby looters.
If it presents you with any problems, I'd be interested in hearing about them.

I notice that this company's products are alll setup with European style wall plugs.
I wonder if someone makes these for use with US outlets.

I have been looking around and can not find a US support so i fired off an E-Mail to head office and will let you know when i get a reply.

    Thank you.
I have found a company Asoka USA http://www.asokausa.com/products/residential/pluglink_9650.php
that sells a very similar device (quite reasonably priced) that is set up for US type outlets.

I work at a church and the very thick (12") stone and concrete walls make running LAN cables difficult and wireless connections problematic at best.
We need to expand our network to 2 rooms that have not been previously wired for internet but do have electrical outlets, and this may well be the solution we need.

    Thanks for posting this thread.

I had the exact same problem my house is very old and my PC is 2 walls from the router.

the speed is as good as the router the download is just a tiny bit slower (but then maybe i am just splitting hairs) all round i am very happy so far with the system (wish i had found it before buying an expensive router that was no better than my first one)

Another brand that you can get here in the US is HomePlug.

I've found quite a few of their devices on buy.com.

Thanks to you both. I will post my results after we have tried these.

Actually depending on how your house is wired, a signal can leak out to neighbors and people can use similar adapters to grab your "electrical connection" Cant seem to find the links regarding this, but i remember this being a security concern previsouly, maybe later models now have improved on this. Will try to post back with more links as i find em.

Linksys, Zytel and NetGear makes such products. I was researching to try and connect a computer in the basement.
If I can find the article that compared the US products, I'll post the link.

from the three comparisons, it looks like Netgear moves data the fastest.

    Thanks Colemanguy and Plodr
The more information that I have the better I can present it to our Advisory Council (who have to approve all purchases over $50)
At this point I'm leaning towards recommending this one:
    http://www.buy.com/prod/actiontec-m...t-adapter-2-pack-kit/q/loc/101/204647341.html
It's got a slower transfer rate than many of the others, but this is a church I'm talking about not a gaming parlor, so I think the 85 mbps will probably be sufficient.

my system is 85 mbs and it still gives good speed.

my PC is just a toy for me, i write letters and such but also view video's without any problems

Recieved the system; installed it; works like a charm.
