1.I have been searching for two days for info on LSP's. I understand they can be used in ways that are not cool.

    2. But who can tell me what to look for in an LSP that is bad, or maybe installed from a bad sight.

    3. Ad-aware LSP Explorer, found many on my older pc. But I have no clue what's bad in those. (If they are or not)

    4. Can they all be removed regardless of where they came from, or does windows xp need those too ?

    5. Is there software here on the sight that can monitor those and report to where the info is being sent ?

    6. This should be a heavy topic I think, but a search here did little to provide me with much more info than Ad-aware did two days ago.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks CT

I hope I put this in the right place, felt I did, but maybe ya'll feel different about it. Wasn't sure it would be considered spyware...... Move this if you need too..
    Thanks CT :)

If you're talking about winsock settings, then using ad-aware to remove "bad" settings might result in the loss of internet conectivity. You can use a program such as LSP-fix to repair the settings.

It has been known for spyware to add entries to winsock, but when you remove these you can mess up your settings.

SP2 has removed all need for LSP fix :)

    at a command prompt, type:

    netsh winsock reset

Press Enter. Wait for it to finish and reboot :)

oh thank god. I knew netsh was available prior to, but I had no idea what the commands were and I couldn't figure it out. This makes life much easier. :)

Thanks for the info on that, I believe I have a couple entries on the LSP list that are not what they should be. In fact I am almost positive because I did find a malware listed that was said to install something to do with the LSP's also.

    1. I am wondering if I run the LSP fix I just downloaded, will it fix the bad entries ?

    2. Or will just attempt to repair bad links ?

    3. Will the ProcessViewer application I have downloaded, but yet to install. Show me if one of these LSP's are running ?
    4. I am leary of installing SP2, I don't think I want to tackle that just yet. One example why, I do not understand what or where command prompt is accessed unless it is the "Run" application from the "Start" menu.
    5. Help if you will........ ???????? Please !!!!!!!!!

    6. If I type in what LSP's Ad-aware listed would that be okay ? Can someone tell me from that if one might be bad ? Or should I try to attatch the log it created for that ?

    CT :)

I can't answer the rest of your questions, but this one's a snap --
The command prompt is accessed exactly there: Start, Run, type cmd, Enter, and you'll see the black console window with a prompt blinking in it.

Now at least THAT's out of the way between you and SP2. But a LOT of people are nervous about SP2, so you're not alone. Maybe spend a few minutes reading this page that offers a little help for nervous people who aren't sure how they can prepare to run the SP2 installation with minimal chances of misfires:

Thanks Guys I do appreciate your efforts and info. That's more than I have found on my own. I tried a search on google and msn, but didn't get the results I was wanting... Ad-aware's info on the topic wasn't much either, nor in their forum did I find much at all. Looked in many other forums and that wasn't a help either. SpyBot help didn't give me any new info I had already found else where. It's like searching for a needle in a hay stack for sure..... I will check this out and let you know if I find something else worth looking at..... I also want to say that, although repeating myself again...... I think this is a cool forum, and I for one thank you all for your time and energy you have put into it and helping us "ungeeks" out when we are in trouble ! CT :)

    Got Bad News.......

This program is a good monitor, I believe

    http://maxcomputing.narod.ru/ssme.html?lang=en

(site loads very slow-searched MG for it-didn't see it)

I tried to install the ssm applictaion, but AntiVir found a trojan attached to one of the files. In fact it said one or more files was infected after I quarantined the suspect file.
"MCHOOK9X.DLL" the trojan named "TR/DRP.AphexLace.B" was what AntiVir found..... Beware guys.....
AntiVir saved my but again........ !!!!!!!!!! CT

Make sure you've updated AnitVir, carl, it's probably a false positive (its signatures probably detect similar code which is used to corrupt the LSP)

I removed AntiVir several people have conveinced me that Avast should be better, today Avast found a virus that looks like has been on my pc sense I ran AntiVir. Looks like AntiVir missed it. Anyone had false positives with Avast in the past? I am placing this here for info on Avast not the virus....

    Thanks Carl
