New laptop having issues connecting to wireless...

So, after years of putting up with a laptop that really should be in a museum at this stage, I decided to upgrade a couple of days ago. Everything's fine, except there seem to be some issues with connecting to the wireless.

When I initially tried setting up the laptop and using our connection, it asked for a password but couldn't join. After setup, any subsequent attempts to join didn't even ask for a password and denied access instantly. If I tried to connect to a neighbour's wireless, I still get asked for a password.

I reset my router to factory settings, and now I've found that, with any kind of security enabled, nothing in the house can detect the connection at all. Everything connects fine when there's no security, but understandably that's hardly ideal.

I'm using a D-Link DIR-301 router, and my new laptop's a Dell Inspiron 15. I'm guessing there's a dodgy setting somewhere, but I have no idea what. MAC filtering is definitely off.

Anyone got any ideas?

My suggestion would be to try setting your router back to factory default again and then check to see if there are any firmware upgrades for your router.

The instructions for upgrading firmware are on Page 38.
I would also use a wired connection in doing the initial set up again.

As it turns out, I've actually managed to sort it now; reset it to factory settings and then changed the security to WPA rather than WEP.

My Dad worked on it while I was at work and said 'it doesn't work with any security on', turns out what he actually meant was "It doesn't work with WEP security".

Seems to be working fine for now, though.
