Not sure what the proper forum for this one would be, but my wife recently graduated college and would like to get herself a laptop with her grad money. We have a pretty decent one right now (acer) so this new one would just be a basic docs/surfing computer that she could use if I need the acer for school. We are low income college folk right now so all we have is the $500 from her gift money. Can anything good come of that? I know folks at school reccommend a Dell, but I wasn't sure, what and where would the best place to go? thx

Maybe try a refurbished one. Here in OZ, for example, refurbished ones (probably Pentium 3's) sell for around AUD$599. Should be a lot cheaper in the good ol' USA. Bazza

These are the DELL options for a basic laptop pc, which will do for surfing and general pc work as in word processing, business apps etc,

( some mail-in rebates are needed to lower the price ) The B120 to the right seems the best option as it has 512mb Ram over the cheaper of the 2 B130s which only has 256mb, taking into account the shared graphics card will take 64-128mb that wouldnt leave much for XP to run so the 512mb solution even with a slightly smaller 14.1" screen is the more attractive of the 2 imo.

    other option

    ACER Aspire 3624WXCi
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=337479&pfp=521sale $549.99 SAVE $100 after: $100.00 mail-in rebate(s) personal note: I do like ACER as a brand, so this one would be high on my list.

maybe some of the folk in the USA will have some better options for us as I dont know many of the US PC retailers... Gateway I did check and they have no laptops under $749.

I'm really pleased with my new Gateway MX6450, but as Halo mentions, they don't come under $750. It does have the 1 gig HD and 1mb RAM, so if you can stretch the budget, it is a great investment and perfectly capable for your purposes. Best Buy (where I purchased from) currently do a 6-month interest free credit on purchases over $250, so you could pay off the lump sum with the $50 and just make payments on the remaining $250 over 6 months and still incur no extra interest charges :) HTH

Posting this from an Acer laptop :)

They are rock-solid computers and they have good support/customer service, too.

You need to add some zeros to those specs Lev! :D No one would want that PC with those specs. ;) How about 100 Gb drive and 1000Mb RAM (aka 1GB). :D
