New laptop with no Hardrive. how do i make it work?

    My buddy gave me a almost new dell latitude 820 thats missing the hardrive
    i have a 120g external HD. how can i install windows xp pro back onto the laptop like it had. I have the product key on the bottom of the dell. do i need to get a disk or get things from dell or what. do i need an original hardrive?
    Please help me im trying to have this up for christmas for my wife?
