Is it just me or has the lastest Microsoft Critcal Updates (July 30 & July 31) packages just disallowed "Save Password" for starting internet connection?

I must now enter my password everytime I start my internet session. When I start a session the 'Connect To' box comes up. It has my name as usual but now I must enter my password. The "Save Password" check box is grayed out.
I want my preferences set to the WAY I WANT THEM!

Is there a way to change them back?

Also, if I go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Dial Up Networking/ ...right click..Properties/Security....in the authentication box the 'password box' is grayed out.

I tried making a 'new connection', but again the Properties/Security/Authenication/Password box is grayed out.

I was just going to ask if you were on broadband or dial up, and if so what dial up service do you use? Also, check your Add/Remove Programs option in Control Panel. There may be an option to remove the Hotfix that you downloaded that's preventing you from getting online.

If you could post the Windows Update number of the fix you're talking about, researching this would be a lot easier :)

The other option would be to preform a rollback on your System Restore.

    Re: New Microsoft Updates/Password

as you are using ME and if you have system restore ON ... you could go back to a restore point before you installed the hotfixes as IIRC by default updates create a restore point.

but as ICeMaN said if you know the hotfix version number please post it!

Maybe it is not the MS update. I was cleaning up my computer (after a complete reformat a couple weeks ago) and found that a LAN network program was running. I'm not on any LAN so I ditched it. It was after I cleaned this application from my system that the password problem cropped up.

You never said if you used Dial-up or Broadband such as a cable modem or DSL. After reading the MS KB about the patch you specified I doubt your trouble is coming from that. If you are on a dial up service, what service are you using? Do they use Window's Telephone dialer like that? And in what instance are you prompted for a password?

It could be that my ISP, a tiny local Michigan provider, had this LAN install when I used their Connecting CD. A little nosey, don't you think? Anyway after purchasing a piece of .... Intel 536B modem from them last week and their refusal to take it back...I'm rambling.

    Thanks for the advice guys.

BTW: Any suggestions on the best under $50 v92 modem to buy? My ISP does support v92. I'm think of a Zoom 3025.

    The solution is this:

You deleted Client For Microsoft Networks, didn't you? Reinstall it and you will get your Save Password box back.

Honestly I coulldn't tell you what modem to look for... personally I used to use Creative's modem's before I switched over to broadband. A lot of the review sites that came up in a Google search for Modem Reviews are outdated by at least a year. I'd check a local PC retailer or repair shop and see what they recommend.

I see my suggestion was passed over with comment.

    Thanks!

Your solution assumes his password file is damaged, and it's better to rename it to something.old than out-and-out delete it. If my assumption is correct, and I think it is, he should try my suggestion first.

I'm sure it's not the update -- as everyone else has said too.

Have you read everyone's posts?? They offer great ideas. You should check out these issues on your computer -- see if it fixes the problem, then let us know.

Yeah, because as we all know, deleting .pwl files can mess up your system.

Your suggestion is sound, now that he gave us that information, but don't discount mine unless you know.

For what it's worth, I think the dude just decided to deal with his problem and try to get a new modem. I don't think any of our suggestions were followed through on :\

    Re: New Microsoft Updates/Password

Problem fixed! I got my auto password back! I had to make a new connection from my ISP's installation CD. That reinstalled My Network Places (LAN). I don't like the idea of having this program. Will talk to the ISP guy about eliminating it.

I don't remember the site where I got info 'How To' delete My Network Places, apparently I failed to save it to favorites. TheDoug's inference that I deleted 'Client for Microsoft Network' may have been on the list of things to do.

To ICeMaN, I put Creative on my list of modems. I simply cannot afford DSL until it drops under $25/month. Best I can do here in the boonies is $39.95

Yes Adrynalyne, I passed up your suggestion. But it was on the list!

    Thanks All,

About my modem problem. It all started 3 weeks ago, I shut down the PC and spent the day in town. It was a beautiful sun shiny day, not a cloud in the sky. When I returned and started up the PC to go surfing, I found my phone line dead.

I walked over to neighbor George’s and asked if his phone was dead. He said it was! He also told me it had been disconnected since he quit paying his telephone bill! My other close neighbors had service. I tried the service box outside my house and the phone worked. So now I began to investigate the wiring in the house and found that an extension line running in the basement had somehow fell to the floor. The basement floor was damp from all the rain here in Michigan and this had apparently shorted out the line. I placed the line back up in the rafters and the modem worked fine again.

Soon, however, it really began to bog down with connects of 19,000, 20,6000, etc. and a dead ‘no dial tone’ line while surfing. I rechecked the extension line...sure enough... I didn’t secure the line well enough as I found it dangling just above the moist floor. OK, I taped it up good this time. But then a couple days later a bolt of lightning struck very near to the house.

After these episodes, I have never been able to regain the normal 48,000kps connection I had. Sometimes, I get disconnected. At best, I get 41,333. Modem fried? Phone line corrupted? I eliminated the extension phone line, but the speed still did not return to par. Then I tried a new modem.

I purchased a generic with an Intel 356B chip. I got it from my ISP guy. Its made for v92 service and he told me...perfect for use on his ISP. Well...this masterpiece of technology connects at 48,000/49,333kps but within a half an hour it will stop transferring bytes or disconnect. After putting up with a couple of days of that, I researched a number of forums about modems and found that the Intel 356B is the biggest crummiest piece of maggot feces ever manufactured! I then reinstalled my old Lucent WIN modem and am currently trying to get the ISP guy to give me back my money ..

So, long story short, I’m still looking for a good, inexpensive modem.
