The wife just got a new MoBo, GFX card and CPU today. Hooked it all up and can't boot. I am getting a STOP: 0x0000007b error (blue screen) when Windows tries to boot. I have looked the error up and Microsoft says it is most likely due to there not being the correct hard-disk controller info available. Their advice to fix it is to use the same hardware in the new computer as was in the old one.

Is there another way around this, or do I have to reinstall the old MoBo, Backup all her files, then do a fresh install with the new hardware?

Your Windows XP install will cease to function with an upgrade like that. The best way to fix it would be to do a clean install of WinXP. You could try just installing Windows on the current partition. It may or may not work. Just be careful... DO NOT FORMAT the hard drive. If you get to the part in the Windows installation where it is asking which drive you want to install on and says you need to format, you will instead need to put the old hardware back in, backup your files, THEN format the hard drive and do a clean install from there.

Your hard drive will be configured to your old mobo, you'll have to to format and reinstall windows, install the correct drivers for your new mobo.

As wyatt says make sure you have a back up of your old files before formatting.
