I want to replace the motherboard and cpu in an old Gateway (static/squeal)desktop.I`ve been told the computer will only use this one board because of the way its wired. How ever I found the wire scematc for this computer. Now my question is if I buy a new mobo will I get a diagram of how its wired or do I need to search for it too. Also I need to know how to tell if a mobo will fit my gateway tower? Thanks

if you're getting a new mobo and cpu, why not get a new case and transfer the old components?

what you're reffering to is the power supply being a proprietary gateway model, meaning it would not plug correctly into another motherboard. Dell did that for a while too.

I really dont recommend trying to put a new motherboard in an older proprietary tower, its just not worth thr trouble.

you can get a new case for very cheap, and depending on what kind of motherboard/cpu combo you are going for, power supplies are quite cheap now too.

also, what about the video card? is your gateway onboard or what kind of card do you have?

Ok so if my case is no go all I have to start with (new)is a nVIDIA GeForce MX 4000 graphics card AGP 128 MB DDR VGA&S-Video out....Linksys wireless G PCI adapter...Memerex CD-RW recorder....I assume the Gateway keyboard, monitor, floppy, and mouse will be usable.Any suggestions on what mobo/cpu,and case will work with that card?Best (cheapest) place to buy?

What about these http://www.tigerdirect.com/cgi-bin/ShoppingCart.asp?msg= will the work with the above ok?Sorry to be such a pain but some times I`m slower than my old computer.also what about BIOS and my os,can I use the Windows Me that came with the Gateway or do I need a new one?

i had the same idea as you do a while back when my original comp was a gateway. i have since moved on to a new case and new win xp instead of the gateway installed xp. if u have the schematic for your current set up and if you get a new motherboard the manual should also state a schematic for its plugs also. on mine i had to move wires to diffrent positions on the plug to make it all work. it can be done but like inyearstocome said a new case would be a lot better, you can just plug it all up instead of going through the whole schematic deal.

We can't see 'your' shopping cart.

If you can tell us what your current setup is, how much you want to spend, and what you use your computer for, we can offer better suggestions about what to get.

exactly as said above, give us a rough estimate on what you're capable and willing to spend, and what you would like to use the computer for, and we can give you our best opinion accordingly.

as it stands, your graphics card is very low end, and being AGP that would limit you to a motherboard supporting AGP. or...

alternatively, within reasonable price there are newer generation boards that are PCI-Express (for future upgradeability) and have onboard graphics superior to an MX4000

with either choice (more on those when you give a price estimate), you will need the following:

    Case
    Power Supply Unit (PSU)
    Motherboard
    CPU
    RAM

the Windows ME that came with your gateway has drivers specific to that model, so the installation CD will likely not work-- though the CD-key might be useable... however i highly recommend against ME, it is a terrible OS and not well supported.

Ok, so you have a <$250 desired budget, which is not too easy to deal with... lets see what we can do. First, your RAM is 168 pin SDRAM, which will no longer work since newer Chipsets uses DDR SDRAM which is 184 pin DIMM's (and even newer ones use 240 pin DDR2 now)

So you intend to use the system for anything more than very light gaming? If so, probably disregard this next option...

I wouldnt normally recommend buying a dell to someone who has interest or is comfortable with building their own system, but this is a pretty good deal not too far from your price range, though there is no AGP slot for a video card upgrade so you're stuck with onboard Intel Extreme 2 graphics-- which arent too great at all.

Dell Dimension B110: Celeron D 325 (2.53GHz), 256MB DDR400 RAM, 80GB Hard drive, CDRW+DVD combo drive, 17" CRT monitor + keyboard and mouse AND Genuine Windows XP Home for $299, no tax.

Otherwise, I will try to find a cheap DIY solution-- but i'm pressed for time right now so it will have to wait till later today :)

Ok I put a power supply from my HP into this gateway and it ran(still had the squeal) so does this mean its not a "proprietary tower"?just wondering...Thanks

Hi. I have an older gateway PII and had problems with the case size and the motherboard not allowing enough room to add a cheap dvd-rom reader I had bought. My solution was to forget the Gateway as an upgrade path.

It is kind of expensive to build a new system BUT, it doesn't have to be. You could get a fairly good case with power supply (on sale), get a micro-atx board and chip (on sale) and pretty much have a complete computer. The ram isn't very expensive now and you can get an excellent dvd burner for under 40 USD or so.

Get a floppy too. I have needed them many times when playing around with different operating systems and find myself unable to format a hard drive unless I used a floppy to get things going.

I just finished an AMD64 system for myself and used a 56 USD motherboard that is excellent. I paid 3 times that for a nice cpu though. I received (today) my new 19 inch LCD that I ordered for 199 USD after rebate and it is super!

The low cost route would be to get a micro-atx board with a celeron D for less than 100 USD. You won't need a video card until you want to upgrade and you won't need a sound card. I buy Antec cases when they are sale for about 40 USD (including a power supply).

The micro-atx motherboards have a vga port so you could get an LCD monitor that supports vga and dvi and later upgrade to a good video card if you need it to play games. Just be sure to get a motherboard that has an AGP or PCI-E slot, not all of them do.

Win XP Pro will cost about 140 USD or I have seen the Home Edition for a lot less.

You would probably like a fairly big hard drive and you can get one for about 40 USD after rebates.

It is usually cheaper to just buy a system though-- but if you like to make things it is not too hard to build your own.

Just my thoughts on building your own. Hope I haven't rambled on too much.
