Hi, I'm replacing the motherboard on an existing XP system. It seems it is possible to avoid the XP repair by doing a couple of things while the old system is still running. Uninstall the vga card drivers and change the IDE + AGP controller driver to the Windows XP default driver (standard dual channel PCI IDE controller and PCI standard PCI to PCI bridge). does anyone know how to change those drivers to the windows defaults. I think it can be done in device manager but I'm not sure. thanks for any feedback.:confused

use the roll back drivers option, when you first installed XP it installed generic drivers for your board, then you installed drivers from its disk. If you go into Device mangager and select the devices you want to change, then select roll back drivers, it will go back to windows default unless you installed new mobo drivers over the old ones. I hate to say it, I have tried many times and followed many tutorials and I always ended up reformating and reinstalling XP or Win98 when I change a motherboard. The only thing I haven't tried is some mobo driver disks actually have an uninstall option. You could try that, run your mobo disk again and see if it will uninstall for you. Of course if you have a dell or hp computer you don't have a mobo disk or a place to roll back to.
