    Hello:

I was talking to one of my computer buddies and he was telling me that Microsoft is introducing a new o/s in 2006 called Vista. Is this correct and does anyone know anything about it yet?

    Thanks

Google vista and you'll get tons of hits. I'm currently running Beta1 as a test and besides the great visuals, it doesn't offer me any more than XP IMHO. As to the date, MS is really pushing hard, Beta 2 was supposed to be out next month but it's now said to come out next February or so. MS and deadlines don't seem to work together.

They've removed many of the goodies just to be able to ship by Dec 2006. I seriously doubt it will ship, given their track record.

Isn't Linux considered to be a stronger, more reliable OS? I keep hearing that it does not crash as much and how many different versions there are. Is it more of a "techies" Operating System or can anyone use it? Sorry about upending the thread, seemed like a good place to ask. Thanks. :) :)

More reliable that Vista? dunno as Vista has been programmed differently than older MS Opp systems and as such is touted to be much more stable than even XP is* plus as its Beta still that question is much too early to answer.

As for Linux not crashing.... sadly it does, just like any software can, is its a techies OS... well yes/no some versions do take a bit of knowledge to get installed fully, BUT you can try out a live version ( runs off the CD, no install needed ) in the form of Knoppix if you wish to get a taster of Linux.

*only my personal observations on using it since beta and on many PCs

I just hope Vista doesn't become another Windows ME. :(

Apart from repeatedly postponing the release date, which I've grown accustomed to with Micro$$oft, they have removed it's best feature, WinFS, which was a totally new file system.

If it's XP with a few Mac like Aero icons, then I'll wait, but I need a very good reason to upgrade from XP.

Also, it will require serious hardware to be able to run it with all it's extra's. (In spite of Micro$$oft's minimum specifications)

That hardware is available today, but it's fairly expensive.
