Is the BIOS set to boot from the CD/DVD before the hard disk?
Slightly puzzled why you should need driver software to install on a new, blank hard disk, and why you go back to a downloaded XP version instead of sticking with vista.
If the vista is a genuine licenced disk, you shouldn't have a problem

Hmm, disconnect everything from your computer except for video and memory and try to load Vista. There is nothing special about your setup and Vista should have all drivers onboard. Oh, BTW having XP on an external drive sounds weird, can one actually boot that? Oh, since it's downloaded, that XP is pirated and I won't even bother answering any questions about that.
