I just got a new pc, no hd, no o/s. Can I just put my old hd in there or get a new one and clone it? What about the o/s on the existing hd? Do I need a copy of XP to put on the new pc?

No. Your old OS is set up for your old hardware. Windows will not load and will just crash on the new PC.
Yes. You can perform a safe reload on your old hard drive with it hooked up to the new PC if you want to save your data and programs. Windows should run OK if you do this, but it's highly recommended to do a fresh install on the new PC using a cleanly formatted hard drive.
