I'm getting ready to build another machine. However, it only has one purpose -- Video.

I won't be doing any editing, any gaming, anything really with this machine except watch videos. Be it DVD or Divx. I want to know the cheapest (yet most reliable) hardware I can use to get the best out of videos.

(I have a case, a DVD player, and a HD already. I'm looking for the rest of the stuff.)

I don't have an exact budget, but try to keep the cost of the parts low. Thanks.

Here are a few suggestions for an AMD setrup, you could probably go a little cheaper on the video card and processor. One question a home dvd player would probably be cheaper depends on the one you pick out some play Dvix movies too.

If it's just going to be used to play DVD's, then you don't need powerful hardware.

A decent, budget motherboard coupled with a Sempron or Celeron, whichever you can get cheaper.

A motherboard with decent onboard sound will negate the need for a soundcard, and sound just as good to all but the most discerning.

I want this machine to be able to run all sorts of video types. DVD, VCD, AVI, MPEG, etc etc.

So, I'm not just looking for DVD playback. :p Also, I was looking at S-Video cables. The computer I'm using now has a problem which I'm curious about.

When I play videos with my S-Video, there's scanlines. Like, a darker portion of the screen about an inch tall (edit: My TV is 50 inch, so keep that in perspective. :p) that kind of scrolls up the screen. It's not really noticable unless you're looking, but, I'm looking.

Are the cables the problem? If so, can you recommend cables to get with the new setup? :x

Regardless of the compression or codec used, you don't need a powerful machine.

It's only encoding or editing where you do.

I can't offer any suggestions for your other question as I don't fully understand what your problem is?

Regarding the svhs lines, that may be from you computer, cable or even
tv. If I had to guess, I would say cable first, computer video card
    and probably not the tv.
Good svhs cables can be found everywhere.
You didn't mention anything about your computer. What's the proc speed?
If it's anything over 2ghz or so, then you would probably only need
to get a better video card. I'm partial to Ati in the mid-range cards
    but that's your call.
My suggestion would be an Ati Radeon 9800 pro 128mb card.
120 bucks delivered to your house and it would do everything you need it to do for video, in high style.

I've got an AMD 3000, 1GB of RAM, and an nVidia 6800 Utlra. So, I don't know that it'd be my computer.

The cable just sorta came with my video card. So, I doubt it's anything fancy. The TV I don't know too much about, really. It's just a mitsubishi 50 inch TV my dad got a few years back.
