I have recently got a new pc, before it i had a pc that only used hard drive's which connected to a motherboard with IDE cable's the new one only use's SATA but has the slot's on the motherboard to use IDE cable's.

The problem i have is that my storage hard disk which i connected to my new pc via an IDE cable is not being detected by my pc, Well it is being detected by the device driver's and BIO's but not acceable.

Any idea what's going on? I normaly come here for pc advice and you have not failed me yet.

o and im running Vista btw ( :( ) if you needed to know.

If you type disk management in the Start menu search box, then in the window that opens does Windows see the disk? If it sees the disk in the graph what does it say about the space/partition(s) for that disk?

since you are running Vista....go into BIOS and check your ACHI or ATA settings. I have had the same problem with Vista before. I replaced the Hard drive and did a fresh install of vista, only to have it freeze at the verifying stage. When I went into BIOS and changed my ACHI and ATA settings, it worked fine.
I'm not sure which one I used exactly, but which ever one you are currently using....try the other one.

In disk management it say's the disk is offline, and i messed with the BIO's setting's and i did mess with the setting's but it did not have any effect.

It also say's the disk is dynamic and if i can right click i can convert it to a basic disk, however that mean's i will lose all the data on the drive

I'm not familiar with the Disk showing as offline, I'll have to read up on the options unless someone else is familiar. There is no option to "reactivate" the disk when right-clicked? According to Help that would be the first thing to try. If that doesn't help then it is most likely due to the SATA/IDE configuration.

Have you tried changing the drive jumpers (and using Disk Management each time) to SLAVE, MASTER, and CABLE SELECT? IDE is notorious for wanting a certain jumper setting to use the drive.

I HAVE NO PICTURES MYSELF, BUT HERE YOU CAN SEE THE TYPICAL JUMPER SETTINGS ON AN IDE HARD DRIVE-

IF IT IS SEEN IN THE BIOS, AND COMPUTER MANAGEMENT/DISC MANAGEMENT, AND IT STILL WILL NOT READ IT, THEN I WOULD LOOK AT ALLOCATING A DRIVE LETTER.
Have you tried looking in my computer to see if you can read it from there?
I believe it needs to be given a drive letter to use it (as you have data you want to read/save/use). I usually set mine to something to avoid dvd roms etc, to G, OR, H.

So is the SATA drive still connected? If so is the IDE drive one from another computer you had? Was it the boot drive? Is it still flagged as such (check with a Live CD version of GParted). 2 drives with primary boot partitions can cause the one not booted from unable to be accessed.

Microsoft often come up with an answer
To reactivate a dynamic disk by using the Windows interface
    1. In Disk Management, right-click the disk marked Missing or Offline.
    2. Click Reactivate Disk. The disk should be marked Online after the disk is reactivated.
To reactivate a dynamic disk by using a command line
    1. Open a command prompt and type diskpart.
    2. At the DISKPART prompt, type list disk. Make note of the disk number of the missing or offline disk that you want to bring online. Missing disks are numbered M0, M1, M2, and so on, and offline disks are numbered 0, 1, 2, and so on.
    3. At the DISKPART prompt, type select disk <disknumber>.
    4. At the DISKPART prompt, type online.

But would that not cause me to loose my data?

Also I'm in the process of attempting the other idea in your other post

But im having the same problem My PC detect's the removeable mass storage device in device manager and disk management but won't allow me to acess it via My computer.

p.s. i have also upgraded to window's 7 ultimate x64bit in hope's that it would help resolve this.. sadly it did not.

This should not cause data loss if the the option is available.
