I am planning to build a new PC, and here are some of the things I am considering putting in it. Let me know what you think.

Antec PLUS1080AMG SOHO File Server Case
Antec True430 430 Watt Power Supply included
Intel 2.4 CPU, only because the difference in price for faster is a lot.
    Intel BOXD865PERL D865PERL Mother Board
    512 MB DDR-SDRAM
    Crucial Radeon 9100 Video card
Seagate ST3120026AS 120 GB Serial ATA Barracuda 7200.7, Two of them
I will use the Monitor I have now.

What core is that P4? Presott or Northwood? I'd recomend a Northwood core, even if it is older it doesnt run nearly as hot as a prescott.

What speed DDR ram? PC2700 or PC3200? Also what brand. Have you checked it with the motherboard? I dont think Intel have many memory compatibility problems but its worth checking.

Personally, I'd recomend a WD or Maxtor drive rather than Seagate.. seagate seems to be pretty average in all the SATA reviews ive looked at (been shopping for myself today), and Maxtors seem better value for money. But thats just my opinion.

It is an Intel BOX80532PG2400D P4/2.4C

    (2) Crucial CT3264Z40B 256 MB PC3200 CLS

    Will look into it. Thanks.

what will you be using it for mostly? I assume you're not going to use it for heavy gaming looking at the videocard you chose.
    nice case though :D

    btw, just to clarify:

P4/2.4C - Northwood core, which is good, overclocks better and runs way cooler than the Prescott (which is the P4E).

I have not done much if at all gaming, but you never can tell, I might become interested in it someday. I am on a fixed income so am trying to save some money. I have even considered Athlon, but I have always preferred Intel. Besides that would mean a change in cases too I imagine. Thinks have really changed since I last built one of these things up.

What I am really trying to decide is whether to go AMD or Intel, and if I want to use WD, Maxtor or Seagate drives. I know I will most likely upgrade that video card I mentioned..

Always choose a known company but just dont buy for names...look for the lowest seek times and max writes.

I think most people here are partial to AMD because they are better bang for the buck, so to speak. I would suggest an Athlon XP 2600+ Barton with an nForce2 Ultra 400 mobo from one of the brand name manufacturers. (Asus, Abit, MSI, Gigabyte) The only difference I see between Intel and AMD is $$$. Either way you go though, you should be fine.

I have heard that AMD has a higher heat problem. Is that true?

they do get hotter, but its not a problem. I've got a 2600+ and it runs about 45C all the time.

You could also get a top of the line heatsink/fan combo in addition to an AMD motherboard/CPU and still spend at least $70 less than an Intel motherboard/CPU.
