After my old PSU went the way of the dinosaurs, I replaced it with a new unit. Once replaced, I noticed my CD-ROM and DVD player/burner were not being detected. Both indicator lights will light up on start up, however when Im at my desktop, the CD-ROM's tray will not open but the DVD's tray will.

    Could they be dead?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I doubt your PSU is at fault since both your drives have their operational lights functioning and and trays coming out, except for the CD. When you insert a DVD, does your drive read the disc? A possible solution is to go into the Device manager and uninstall both drives, re-boot and let Windows re-install the drives and see if that helps. BTW, when you replaced your PSU, what brand and wattage was it? Was it equal to the old one in power? Let us know how it goes!! If no change, com'on back.

The DVD drive is not able to read DVDs. :(

Drives aren't in Device Manager. I'll check again just in case I overlooked something

The old PSU was the original in the PC (HP). It had an input rating of 100v-127v. The closest I could find was an Athena Power unit with a rating of 115/230v (7A/4A)

Something Simmilar happened to me...I tried connecting 3 drives: 2 HDD's and a DVD-ROM.The Pc would start up but the hdd that was not plugged into the primary IDE port didn't work..It seems my PSU wasn't strong enough...Hope this helps...A bit

Okay, they aren't in the device manager. Did you check to see if they were listed in the BIOS, or on the BIOS summary when you re-boot? If not, it is possible that when your old PSU went south, it could have very well taken your 2 drives with it. Trust me, I know what can happen when a PSU goes!! IF that is what happened, be thankful that's all it took. However, let's not 'put the cart in front of horse' just yet!! I found an older post by Adrynalyne that may help, here it is; http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=145532 Try that approach and, hopefully, that will get you back up and running. Concerning your new PSU, I would advise you to spend a little more money and buy a brand name PSU, like Antec or OCZ only because the 'El Cheapos' could end up costing you more down the line and the fact that the cheapies don't have the quality of the better name brands.

Anyhow, see if that links helps and let us know!!

    Hi,

You tell : " Both indicator lights will light up on start up, however when Im at my desktop, the CD-ROM's tray will not open but the DVD's tray will. "

By mistake, you forget to plugin back the Molex power conector in Cd-rom ?

    Stubby,

According to the BIOS, they're non-existent :( I attempted the second method in the thread by "Adrynalyne" with no luck.

Looks like Im off to the store..

    Mos_Ilie,

Yeah. Its one of the things I kept checking heh

Sorry to hear that but, like I said, just be thankful that's all that has gone bad. The last time a PSU (a cheapie) went south on me it took , MB, RAM and CPU with it:cry That's why I was concerned about your replacement PSU. If you want to consider another PSU, just post your specs and I'll get you some links to some 'clean power,' efficent PSUs. I've heard of Athena PSUs and the ones I found don't even list an efficency rating. I know they are used as replacements in Dell machines and, I guess HP also. I know that they are made by GPB Enterprises, but I can't find a web site for them. Good Luck!!!

So far the PSU has been working fine, but I plan on upgrading to another PC in the coming weeks.

Thanks again for all the help :)

Those voltages will be the AC input voltages. If you're in North America, the AC input voltage is not terribly meaningful as long as the PSU will run on an AC input of 110-120v. In other parts of the world, you may need 220-250v.

What's important is the wattage output rating. You need to make sure that the replacement PSU has at least the same wattage output as the one it's replacing. Or preferably, a higher wattage output. A PSU with insufficient wattage output will not be able to maintain the voltages it supplies to your computer. Then bad things happen.

And as Stubby implied, the el cheapo manufacturers sometimes fudge the wattage rating or don't regulate the output voltages well enough.

    Hi UVA,

Rob is correct. In addition: the 100/127 PSU is single voltage to run on 120VAC or any voltage in between. The 115/230 is dual voltage and will have a switch on the back to change from 115 to 230. If you are on 120 it would make no difference to you.

    Good Luck, Jim

Nobody has mentioned and I'm sure you checked it but I'm going to say it anyway because it happened to me. Last time I changed a power supply, the IDE cable connecting the motherboard to the drives came loose. Make sure you double check all the connections (both ends) on *all* the cables. Unplug and reseat if you have to.
