My CPU is maxed out when gaming so I wanted to upgrade it to stretch it till I can build a new P.C.. It's a OEM HP and I've attatched a pic of Mobo model, etc... HP will no longer help because I've reinstalled the OS. Does anyone know how to find exactly what chip I can upgrade to? It would be my first chip replacement.

tater go into your bios and see what you FSB will go to. If it will go to 200 you can run the 3200 AMD If it only goes to 166 I think the 3000 AMD is as high as you can go. Double check every thing I say, I'm going by what I've done which is not always the right thing to do.

    Thanks mgrist,
    In the bios it says:
    CPU type Athlon XP 2200+
    CPU speed 1800 MHz/ 266 MHz
    CPU cache ram 256k

So is 266 what I'm looking for?
    Thanks

Follow Mastertech's lead, he's alot smarter then I am.

What I was referring to: In your bios under one of those headings there is a line that says FSB and beside it it will say 133 or 166 if you highlight that line and hit your page up key the number will change, hit it a couple of times and see what it changes to. Then put it back to what it was and exit out with the "don't save changes" in case you hit something inadverntently.

    Thanks guys,
@ Mastertech: The P.C. is a Pavilion 562. I tried Everest and it completely locked up the P.C. Same thing happened with Aida. The only one that works is Belarc for some reason. No other problems with any other program. I previosly posted a few screenies from Belarc, is there more I could post from Belarc or is there another prog to try?

@Mgrist, I'll try that right now.

I tried the bios Mgrist but there was no FSB setting listed to alter. :(

I just rebooted my MSI board and in Bios it is listed under "Advanced chipset features" under that heading is "CPU FSB Clock" your board shoulld have similar listings, maybe thet are just worded different. Try it one more time and pay attention to any clock references. Let me know what you find. Then Mastertech can tell you what you really need:D:D:D:D:D

Man, I tried again and didn't see anything at all like that in the bios.

Or look for something where you are able to change soemthing that is around that speed.

just looked it up, your motherboard (MS-6367) supports a 266mhz FSB.

that means the highest you can go is the Athlon XP 2600+ Thouroughbred B.

be careful that you order the correct version with the 266FSB, as there are 3 versions of this processor. (the other two have 333FSB, and one is a Barton core)

agreed Mastertech, all i saw on the website was the FSB supported, however i saw a few other lists claiming the 2600+ would in fact work, so I'm basing it off of that.

Thanks guys, I will check HP. This is the last time I "buy" a P.C., gonna try building one next time and boy will I be on these boards A LOT then!

its much easier than you think, just ask before you 'do' so you dont make any expensive or tedious mistakes. :p

however if you want to build something, maybe you shoiuld consider upgrading your video card so you can carry it over to the new computer?

if you try to carry over a 2600+, it will limit you.

I have a TI 4200 with 128 meg. (I know, not up to snuff) but after monitoring memory and cpu with cacheman during gaming, the processor is always pegged at 100%. Am I wrong or would a processor be the best upgrade to strech things out until PCI express is common/affordable and I build new from scratch? I do a lot of gaming (UT2004, Nascar2003, Links 2003, NHL 2004 and Rise of Nations) and I'm just getting by now. Gonna have to wait to try doom3 I think.

a game is designed to ALWAYS use 100% cpu usage, or as much as it can. dont think its only the processor because of that, it would be the same if you had a 5ghz CPU... you'd just have a more flawless game.

in reality, upgrading only mhz in the same athlon family is not likely to give you a performance gain nearly as much as a new video card would.

if you want budget, i just put a Geforce FX5700 into an athlon xp 2600+ system and i loved it. i was sad to give it to its buyers. i liked it better than radeon 9600/pro/xt by far. i would go farther to say i prefer it to a 9800-- even though i'd be pushing it since the 9800 is moe powerful.

thats my suggestion. $110 for an FX5700.

Thanks again guys. Would the performance gain be THAT noticable even with a processor of that speed? Also, would a nice video card I buy now be useless shortly when PCI express comes out?

Very useful info IYTC and greast link Mastertech, you guys changed my mind. Going by those charts it looks like the 5700 isn't too much of a boost (in the particular games I play) so I guess I'll price a few other ones as well. Should I get a 5700 or similar card or go all out with a 9800 XT? I guess I'm worried that a REALLY nice APG will be useless when PCI express comes out or am I way of base with that?

well, PCI express is already out. so far, the performance gains over the same card from AGP8x to PCI Express have not been that significant. future motherboards are going to have 2 PCI-X 16 slots.... but thats a whole nother story.

for short, if you plan to play HL2 or Doom3, you should probably get the best card you can afford, like a 9800XT or an FX5950... unless you can afford the beasts like the Geforce 6800 (GT or ultra) or the X800 pro or XT.

if you dont plan to play those for a while, a 5700 or 9600 will do you fine for almost all current games.

Thank you so much guys, that cleared up a lot and it's appreciated. Time to do some pricing and shopping. :)
