Ive got an HP a1630n desktop with a AMD 64 x2 4600 2.4 GHz processor.

According to Everest Im running Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00pg and a Asus a8m2n-la (nodusm) mobo.

I purchased an AMD 64 x2 5000 Black Edition to upgrade to. Unfortunately when tried to start the computer with the new processor it wont boot up. Nothing ever comes up on screen and the mother board gives out a steady pulse of ~1sec long beeps at ~3sec intervals. I reseated the processor which didn't change anything. I then switched back to my old one and everything worked fine. Since this is my first processor upgrade I thought I might have put to much thermal compound and tried using the 5000 again with less compound and once again a black screen with a beeping mobo so I switched back to my old cpu and am currently using it.

Ive already searched HP's website and spoken to customer service and there are no BIOS updates for my mobo but according to them the AMD 64 x2 5000 Black Edition should be compatible with my PC.

I would greatly appreciate any help from you guys!:confused

Not much help, but I had a like situation when I went from a Celeron 1.8ghz (socket 478) to a Pent 4 3.0E HT on a ASUS P4V8X-MX board. It would just beep when I'd boot it.

I kept trying to go into the BIOS on re-boot, and after the third boot it finally posted a caveat that the processor had been changed, and instructed I go into BIOS to verify and save the changes . . . I have no idea why it took three re-boots.

I think now if I had cleared the CMOS and then re-booted, it would have only taken one try - but that is pure speculation . . .

Will removing and putting back the CMOS battery reset it?

EDIT: I got a BIOS update from HP and tried the processor again. Sadly the screen still stays black BUT the motherboard doesnt beep anymore...

By I kept trying to go into the BIOS on re-boot you mean you kept tapping the key to get into the BIOS every time you powered up even though the screen was blank?
