    why is it not working?

its corsair vs1gb400c3. 1 gb stick. its says its compatible with my mobo (iwill p4ht) on thier site. when i put it in, it just beeps, pc never turns on! tried both slots.

please dont tell me its cause i bought it on ebay. :(. haven't tried testing it in a different comp. dont have another onearound at the moment and it just happened, so maybe someone will have a suggestion. my old ram works btw, when i put it back in.

it was sold as new. looks in pretty good shape, no sctraches or sign of use that i can notice. sticker on it. what are the chances that its not vs1gb400c3?

also, my mobo manual says i should use pc2700 as the highest speed ram, but as far as i know pc3200 is backward compatible, and it is listing on the manufacturors site so What the hell!

OMG, i just found something that might be an unswer, can someone clear this up.

ok, this RAM model is listed as compatible on thier site, but can it be that they assuming things about what kind of processor i have?

i was reading some troubleshooting questions on the corsair site and it said if i have a intel chip and its FSB is 533mhz then i can only use 266/333 ram!!!!!

now, i'm not a big time expert, so i'm not sure what FSB they mean, system info tools give 3 different things, and i though FSB is what you change when overclocking but thats at 133 for me. anyway, i'll assume its something that can be "Rated FSB" or "Original Bus Clock" or "sytem bus clock" or "effective clock" which according to many different info tools is 533 mhz!!!!

does this mean that the ram i got is actually not compatible with my pc even though the peace of shit manufacturors website says it is!!!!!!!!!!!???????????

To my knowledge it should work, just run at the slower speed. ed

crucial.com also lists my mobo as compatable only with pc2100 and pc2700, but gives me a ram stick that is pc3200 as one of the results that are compatible for me. i hate this.

i can't tell. it looks new to me, the box was opened though.

aslo info on the beeps, it seems to be non stop, i counted up to 7, same as if i have no ram in the there at all.

The 2 Kicker's Here: >> it was sold as "new" and... My old ram works btw, when i put it back in. <<

Since we can't mention the foibles of eBay, I'll just say: "Uh, oh!" (Better make that a "Double Uh Oh!")

Seriously though, since you posted that:

"The Old Ram Works" + But when you put the NEW (well, 'eBay new') RAM in = It doesn't work... I'm afraid that the mathematics here are unavoidable - the new stick at least 'could be' faulty. It happens sometimes; even if the RAM arrives looking like it’s in pretty good shape, w/no scratches or sign of use that you can notice.

Memory which is sold as NEW (even on auction sites) almost always comes with some type of warrantee (like 30 to 90 days) if the seller is reputable. When you bought it; did it come with any guarantee at all? Have you tried sending the eBay seller a quick e-mail for advice regarding this problem?

Also, just out of curiosity here; what was the eBay sellers "feedback rating?" (from buyers, I mean - not "sellers")

    Good Luck!

what info do you want from everest?

as far as ebay. i know how to shop there, yeah its a risk sometimes, and if this ram is dead i will be fighting to get my money back. just wrote the seller an emails telling him the situation. and i figured even if its faulty then i could send it to the manufacturor as it should be under warranty. i got a good deal on it, it came in fast. and i was waiting to get new ram for so long, always putting it off, i dont even wanna think about those other options right now (sending it back, etc). i wanna make it work.

anyway, for some reason i think it might be incompatible.

    >i figured even if its faulty then i could send it to the manufacturor as it should be under warranty.<

Well, that's easy enough to find out while you're waiting for the seller to respond: There's an incredibly fast and easy way to find out whether that is actually possible (or not). NEW memory auctions always list the applicable "guarantee" or "warrantee" right there on their auction page!

Do you still have the link to the buyers’ auction in your favorites? The auctions still stay there for months; even after the product is sold. Check it out and let us know...

    >>i wanna make it work.. anyway, for some reason i think it might be incompatible.<<

Unfortunately, if that is the case I seriously doubt if you'll be offered any refund or replacement, because even reputable sellers will not offer any refund or return for a product that you bought; if the issue is system incompatability. However you could check right there on their auction page for that info, as well.

    >> i got a good deal on it, it came in fast. and i was waiting to get new ram for so long, always putting it off, i dont even wanna think about those other options right now (sending it back, etc). <<

Whatever the 'deal' or price was, I'd advise never getting NEW memory from any source (especially online) w/o some kind of warrantee or 'return policy' available from the auction page. There's just too much moola involved and even if it only cost 20 bucks with shipping; the risk is far too great with something as fragile and flimsy as a memory stick.

    Good Luck

That is what we want to know ....info on the motherboard / cpu / fsb (front side buss) ....if in fact the fsb is 133 ...3200 ain't gonna work.

Dang it Compuable ..now that's twice .....LOL

i dont know how FSB is broken down, as far as the info it has a "real clock" wich is 133mhz for a fact because i put it in there when i was having problems cause it was originally overclocked to 144. and it has an "effective clock" which is called all those different things i mentioned above by other system info tools and thats 533 (+/-).

so you say 3200 is not gonna work? can you explain why corsair and crucial list pc3200s as compatible for me?

as far as ebay, it was just some guy selling it. the warranty would be from corsair. and the warranty from ebay/paypal also, if the item is infact dead. if its just incopatible then its my fault, well corsairs wesite fault actually. if thats the case i'll probably re-sell it as long as it works.

    and?

what about the ram sticks listed as compatible on both sites that technically dont fit into those specs.

what about pc3200 being backward compatible with pc2700?

And .....since it doesn't work, either it is faulty or the manufacturers recommended spec's are right.

you mean its either faulty or the manufacturers specs are WRONG.

which is what i was asking from the start. which OR is it, and how can i find out.

can i take it to some electronics store somewhere and have it checked? is this something i need to pay for?

Take the ram to a local computer store and have them test it ...can't answer for want or if they would charge you ....if it isn't faulty, then the mobo won't/can't use pc3200.

Dont tell your local shop you bought it on ebay, they will more than likely tell you to take a hike, with your ram. ed

Have you tryed the new memory by its self.

In your BIOS Can you manually set your memory speeds, might be worth a try.

I did some further research for you regarding your problem here.

According to the Corsair main website; they appear to have an excellent "lifetime" guarantee, however their warrantee would not cover your problem in any case; whether it is faulty or whether the RAM is actually incompatible with your PC.

The reason you are not covered at all; is because you are buying through an individual eBay seller (which is not considered to be Corsair-authorized reseller). The following is copied word for word from the Corsair site:
    ==========================================
Q: What does the warranty apply to?

A: This lifetime warranty applies to parts that were purchased from Corsair-authorized resellers, or were supplied by Corsair directly. Authorized resellers are resellers who are listed on Corsair’s web site at the time of module purchase.

Q: What parts are not covered by the warranty?

A: The following parts are not covered by this warranty:

    * Modules that are missing the label containing Corsair’s part number
    * Modules that are purchased from other end users
    * Modules that Corsair determines were not manufactured by Corsair, i.e., counterfeit Corsair modules

    >> I don’t get it. I did so much f---n research before buying it, and it might end up as me buying the wrong thing! << fayban

It’s always a good idea to research the product specs before buying anything from online auction websites. However, unfortunately it appears that you did not research the eBay seller. I checked the eBay auction link that you provided and researched the buyer’s feedback section.

The seller actually has only sold ONE item via eBay since Oct-09-04 (all the rest were items he/she bought). No matter how good the deal looks; buying memory from any eBay auctioneer who has only ONE measly sale under their belt is a crap shoot at best.

Another BAD omen here is that the Corsair Value Select VS1GB400C3 1024MB DDR RAM goes for at least twice as much (as the auction cost you) everywhere else on the web whenever listed model number 1gb400c3 is listed as a NEW product.

About the only "good news" here is that since the seller's auction stated: "I only accept PayPal" - if you actually paid via PayPal you should call them immediately if the seller does not offer a refund. I did this 3 or 4 times using PayPal (called them directly) when I got ripped off and the seller refused any refund - and I got my money back almost immediately! PayPal automatically removed the funds from the sellers account to my PayPal account. The payment also included the shipping charges.

    Pay Pal Phone Numbers:
    1-402-935-7733 (Personal Accounts)
    1-402-935-2057 (Personal Accounts)

Important Note: Unfortunately the call to PayPal for "Personal Accounts" is not free. But whatever the call costs you, it might be worth your while to try calling them; especially if the seller ignores your e-mails and/or does not offer any refund for a part that does not work.

    Good Luck!

well, i have alittle update. went to bestbuy and bought the same model ram to test an acutually new stick will work. i think i noticed is that the stick is slightly different in size, not by much, maybe 2mm. chips on the one from bestbuy are by corsair, the other one has samsung chips (probably doesn't matter). the rest seems to be the same, exept the little pins right under the chip have slightly different numbering on them. they are all either 220 or 022 on both sticks just in different spots.

anyway, bottom line is that the new stick works!

so i guess i'm going after my refund now! thanks for the advice guys.

Great News, fayban! At least you know what the actual problem is now. ;)

Hopefully your seller will provide a refund, however; judging by that seller’s eBay auction listing link that you provided, I wouldn’t count on it. If you get no response (from the e-mail that you previously sent to the seller), you should definitely contact PayPal at that number I previously posted.

Just a tip here if finally you decide to contact PayPal: Be polite and keep your description of the problem brief: Simply tell them that when you received the RAM; it did not function at all from the moment you got it out of the package. These people who answer the phone are usually pretty busy; so don’t whine or give a long-winded lecture about the evils of eBay.

Also have a copy of the auction URL link handy that shows the item sold as NEW and was encased in plastic. Luckily for you the auction DOES NOT state "Sold as Is" and the item was sold as NEW; so be sure to point this out when you call PayPal. And since the seller showed the item encased in plastic and it was being sold as NEW there is no excuses as to why it shouldn’t work.

As for eBay, your auction's listing used the oldest trick in the book for selling (unloading) crappy and/or unusable computer components. Whenever any seller who has little or no feedback and states something like: “It was given to me as a gift” as well as “It is not the right one for my computer it is new never used” it’s a sure bet that the component that they’re selling either faulty or does not work at all, when it arrives at your home.

Even though there are some great buys there and many competent and honest sellers; I'd never in a million years buy anything (particularly delicate computer components) if the seller has no history of multiple sales; especially regarding computer components. The odds of getting crappy parts are too big a risk for me; even if the item "looks" like a good deal.

    Good Luck!
