Bought an ABIT AN8 SLI on ebay assured it was ok only 12 months old.. have put together with AMD ATHLON 4200 Dual/ 1 Gig Corsair/ MSI Nvidia G-Force NX7300LE. Fire up and it reaches the ABIT screen which is first graphics to be seen, then there it stays. Have reseated memory/reset CMOS twice but still the same. Tried booting with all Roms HD's disconnected. All fans and lights working, no beeps, any ideas fellow Geeks.

Took every PCI card including the memory and started booting and adding, when I added the memory and Nothing else I got the Code 05, then I added the Vid card and got the same 05 so is that an incompatible Vid Card.........
    MSI Nvidia G-Force 7 NX7300LE PCI Express ??

I've just noticed that this card is Graphics Processor: Nvidia 7300LE
    Memory: 128MB
Memory Type: GDDR2 so if i am running DDR400 3200 on mainboard would that make it incompatible.. come on folks this is doing me head in..

Is your RAM compatible with the AN8 mobo and identical if dual module? (I'm assuming you did your homework regarding CPU compatibility).

Do you get a short POST beep from the CPU on power up?

Don't think its a graphics card issue if the problem first occurred when ram was added!

Assumptions are not homework I believe :) well looking now i am a bit confused specs from abit site..NVIDIA NF4 SLI Based AMD Athlon 64/64FX Mainboard, 2GHz HT, Dual DDR400..... so does that mean I need a dual acting DDR400 ?? having read all around i am still unclear as here is a test result I found..
'The time of truth has come and let's start with the memory controller (built into the CPU). My previous processor (Athlon 64 3500 ) amazed me with 6.4 GB/s data transfer with HyperX memory (DDR400, timing 2-3-2-6-1) or 93% efficiency -- with 108% overclocking. This being the bar, the Athlon X2 4200 surprised with "only" 5.6 GB/s (87% efficiency) using the same memory and motherboard.... so here its saying DDR400 which is what I have.. any comments nitecrawler??

Reset the CMOS, you have used MOBO, if the seller didn't reset defaults, the Bios setting may be incorrect for your Hardware.
( When ever using a used mobo a CMOS reset is the First thing to do as someone else's settings/Voltages/timings can damage your hardware)

If you have MOBO manual instruction for CMOS reset will be in it, or you can download manual free from Asus web.
Or simply remove the CMOS battery for 10 min or so, then after reset, Power up PC go directly into BIOS, set time & date, then check all your settings, adj to suit your Hardware
If your not able to determining your proper Bios settings then set to default setting then save & exit

If your trying to Boot to a HDD that has Windows installed from another PC that can cause booting problems due to differences in hardware etc.

    NO!
The type of memory your Video card uses doesnt matter
If you buy a new Video card select one that that uses DDR3, DDR3 is faster which means better performance for your video card

You might need to do a bios update. From what I can find this particular board had a bios update a while back that was released for the purpose of adding dual-core support. I would first find out what bios revision you are currently running, and if you cant do that, update the mobo bios from a bootable floppy (if thats possible) Click the link below for more info. Good luck.

No such thing as Dual acting DDR400
Your MOBO & CPU supports Dual channel memory configuration, this is Obtained by using two sticks of DDR memory of equal size & speed, then your memory needs to be installed in the proper memory channels, details are in your MOBO manual.

Your MOBO /CPU Officially supports pc3200/ddr400, unofficially it supports faster memory
If you Overclock or Plan on OCing you can & should use higher speed memory such as PC4000/DDR500

    Abit!
    My bad
Got my glasses on now :)

Better not download anything from Asus web at least not for your Abit mobo

Thanks for you replies Asus.. You said and the seller of this board might need a bios update. but putting that aside this is the specs for this board on ABIT site ....
    Processor
    - Supports AMD Socket 939 Athlon 64/64FX & Athlon 64 X2 dual-core Processors
    - With 2GHz system bus using Hyper Transport™ technology
    - Supports AMD CPU Cool ‘n’ Quiet Technology
so bios update for it to perform with a dual core is not an issue to get it booted according to specs. I left the battery out over night and all power leads but still the same error this morning code 05.. Vendor said error 05 means a cmos reset but that aint working as have tried countless times. Have all cards and roms unplugged and have only graphics and memory installed. Just cant get into BIOS for a peek. This is one big head banger..

Bingo... seller said am I sure the error code was no 50 which is USB prob, it definetely says 05 on LED so with nothing to lose I reversed USB port header connectors on USB 1 & 2 and it booted right away.. but still leaves me wondering why it should prevent mobo from booting to BIOS.. thanx to all for interest and help. :)
