My wife’s HP DV6226US wouldn’t boot, missing or corrupt files. I didn’t want to restore Vista from the Back Up partition; she would lose all her Outlook contact lists and My Doc’s + Pics. I don’t have the Vista CD at our summer location. I have purchased a new Toshiba 120gb 7200rpm SATA HDD. Installed the new HDD; used a Win XP Pro CD Service Pack 1 from an old desktop PC. Win XP setup doesn’t see the SATA HDD. I suspect the HDD isn’t formatted. I’ve ordered a SATA to USB adapter so I can get her files off the old 5400rpm HDD using my Dell with XP Media Edition. How can I format the HDD? Could it be because my XP Pro is so old it doesn’t recognize the SATA? Can I use diskmgmt.msc to format the new Toshiba using the SATA to USB adapter when it gets here?

It wont you need the sata drivers plus i believe sp2. Pretty sure this is the right place for the drivers direct download- ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp32001-32500/sp32478.exe Suggest the best thing to do is to slipstream the drivers into xp with "nlite" plenty of guides out there. In saying that it would probably be easier just to repair the corrupt files using as rescue disk.

You can use the HDD manufactures free diagnostics utility to format the SATA HDD
This free utility will see the sata HDD plus any other HDD installed on your PC
This FREE Utility can be downloaded for free at the HDD manufactures Web site or even here at MG on the front page
These free utilities usually come with retail HDDs on CD

Thank you guys for the tips. I rec'd the SATA to USB adapter, I was able to format the new 7200rpm HDD using diskmgmt.msc on my Dell. Orabus is right on, my old Win XP Pro CD doesn't have SATA drivers. I was able to get wife's data, pics & contacts off of 5400rpm drive. Next step is to try & slipstream Win XP with Service pack 3 onto the new 7200rpm HDD. I found Paul Therrott's SuperSite for Windows and a how to slipstream XP to service pack 3. Worst case is use HP recovery and get Vista back on the 5400rpm for her HP laptop.

Thanks to all who gave me tips. HP doesn't have any drivers for XP only Vista for my wife's model HP. So, I rebuilt the new 7200 rpm with Vista, added other GB of Memory. She's happy. I did learn how to slip stream XP SP3 into Win XP p
    Pro:)
