    Hi yall,
I'm sure this is an easy question but I have to ask it anyway. I have a Dell computer that I bought a while ago, and it came with the amplifier and speakers. Well, I believe I've blown the speakers out. So I bought a cheap pair of speakers at BestBuy. Can't I hook them up to my amplifier? The input on the amplifier is a piece with two cords. One of them leads to where the speaker input is in the back of the CPU. The other is a black cord that leads to a slot around the same area. How can I hook my speakers up to the amplifier? Thanks, sorry if it is a stupid question.

Now's the time to have a look at whatever instructions came with the speakers. The manufacturer knows how to connect those speakers. The rest of us are just guessing, because we have no idea of what speakers you're dealing with.

Also check the documentation for the Dell computer. Dell has been known to use proprietary connections for some of their hardware. If they've done something that is non-standard, the speakers you bought may not work with your computer. Basically, you then have two choices: RTFM, or find someone who knows Dell products. That's not me.

(You could try Dell's website for documentation for your computer. I'd point you to a specific page, but I can't do that without a model number for your computer.)

Some basic powered speakers have the amplifier in the base of one of the speakers. They have a power cable that connects to a wall-wart, and two signal cables. One signal cable is an output that feeds the other speaker; the other is an input cable that plugs into the audio jack on the computer. If your computer's sound subsystem is using the conventional colour coding, plug the speaker lead into the jack with the lime-coloured collar. If there's no colour coding on your computer's audio jacks, find out which is "line out" and plug the speaker cable into that.
