I've now got XP Pro, SP 3 and have decided to replace it with a new tower with Windows 7 due to XP being dumped by MS. I would go with Win 8 but have heard negative things about it.

My question is how much memory do I need? I use it mainly for stock trading (Fidelity Active Trader) and general web surfing and I'd like it to be fast. I'm looking at a Dell with 5GB memory and 500GB hard drive.

    That is a strange configuration.
I have 4GB in two computers but I don't do anything as intensive as you. The next jump is normally to 8GB.
    What Dell is this specifically?

It's the Inspiration 3000 I believe. It's actually 5GB with 1T HD. I thought I could cut the HD to 500GB since I read it could actually slow down the system.

Where are you getting the 5GB? As plodr said, that's not a normal configuration; no ocmputer manufacturer sells computers with 5GB of RAM. Dell's states that the Inspiron Desktop 3000 Series has 8GB.
