New To Linux...Need Some Help..

I have an (extremely) low end project pc I have wiped clean and decided I want to try Linux.

just to get an idea...

its like an AMD-k7 (idk i thinks thats what it was)
with 96mb of ram...


I just wanna try it out before I do it on my main PC...


but what all do I need to download? any links would be nice...I'm reading a few sites right now.

additionally, a few programs you guys like would be nice to know about...and a short description of what they are for/do.

I've been looking at Gentoo Linux...but yea...any help would be nice.

 

From what I have heard Gentoo is not the distro to cut your teeth on. You should probably do a little research.
http://www.distrowatch.com is a good place to start.

Quite a few distros have "live" disks available for dowload. These will run exclusively from the CD/DVD until you choose to install.

Personally I like Ubuntu.

 

Gentoo is not for first time users. Its difficult to setup.

Something low end like that machine...try Puppy Linux.

If you want something cuttign edge and (imo) on par with Windows Vista, check out Sabayon 3.3

It also gives you the oppurtunity to play with Gentoo, and at the same time, easy. Sabayon is basically a heavily customized Gentoo.

dang, btw. I'm attempting to install off of DOS...if thats possible?

 

96 K of RAM is very low for the Linux of today that is autoconfig.

To go back to RH 6 or so would work still.
