I have just intalled a netgear wireless router to two of my computers. I want to share a printer which is wired to the computer which is wired to the router. Any help is appreciated.

Choose Add Printer option from Printers & Faxes in Control Panel on computer without printer. Specify Network Printer. Browse to printer on other machine-- it must be Shared to be seen. (To share it, go into Printers & Faxes on the PC it's connected to, and right-click on the printer and choose Sharing.)

Windows (1) may have built-in drivers, (2) may be able to pull drivers from other machine if they're both running WinXP, or (3) you may have to install the drivers from the disk that came with the printer.

To the best of my knowledge the two computers are not talking to each other. Nothing comes up when I Browse for a printer.

Is File and Printer Sharing enabled? Go to Control Panel -> Network Connections -> right click on Local Area Connection (or the wireless connection, as applicable), and choose Properties.Under the General tab, in "This connection uses the following items", do you see File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, and is it checked? If so, you may want to try just rebooting both machines, to see if the shared resource is then visible to the other machine.

The file and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is checked on both machines. I rebooted both machines but I'm not sure if the "shared resorce is visible to the other machine" means. When I browse for a printer I get a blue Microsoft Windows Network and nothing else. Just to make sure I have this right. My router is connected to the dsl "In" and goes out via cable to my computer which is hard wired to the printer. The computer up stares is connected to the internet via the wifi. The internet on both machines workes fine. Both machines are dell's and both are running windows xp prof. I am really new to this and just trying to make it share the printer.

I'm going to assume that if both machines have internet connectivity, your wiring is OK. A "shared resource" is a hard drive, folder or printer that you have elected to share on the network. You say you see a Microsoft Network icon when you attempt to install a Network Printer on the wi-fi machine-- do you see a Workgroup name below it? Both machines must have the same Workgroup name: Press Start -> right click on My Computer -> choose Properties -> Under the Computer Name tab click on the Change button. Reboot to effect changes.

I've got all that done. Still no good news. I tried to set up a wireless network between the two computers. Still no luck. The computer up stairs has a wireless icom on the network connections but the computer with the printer does not. Is that because the computer is hard wired to the router? I'm still at a loss thanks for all your help so far. jim

I now know whats happening. My Norton Ant-Virus would not let the two computers connect. I can print as long as Norton is off on both computers. Is there a way to have virus protection and the print share capability?

Norton strikes again. May want to give some thought to trying a free solution, like AVG or Avast, and you do have a hardware firewall in your router.
