    Dloading (again) Ubuntu 8.10.

First time round FF prompted that the download was complete around 250MB!!

Knew it was not to be. Still burnt the ISO. Booted from Cd and got the option to run without changing etetc :-D Can't remember too new to this. Anyhow when selected gave an error. Obviously the incomplete ISO to blame.

So started the Dload again and at my BB speed will take another 3hrs :-D

See you all in a bit :wave
    Cheers..

    Hi sikvik.
One tip for avoiding errors on the disk is when you burn it use the lowest possible speed on your burner also select the verify option.
It obviously takes a while longer but give a much better disk.

    Hi sikvik

Indeed burn at a slower speed and if try IMGBurn as I find I dont get as many failures as I did with the likes of Nero and Roxio.

Also if the ISO file is not downloading perfectly, use Free Download Manager to grab it over the usual http download.

Here's the latest!! I'm not installing, just running from Cd.

Ubuntu boots (from CD) Comes up to a light fawn coloured screen.
Then goes to a black screen with a white dot and rotating black dots within.
Next, to a black screen and pointer and that's it...Stuck.

Left it for five mins no activity in the Cd drive!! Can't eject the drive -It's in wonderland, I presume :-D

I reboot - Windows is not happy that I'm ejecting the Cd. Tug of war with the half ejected tray.. I win - yank out the Cd :-D

Does one need to run "MD5SUM on Linux" to check the download. If this is required, how in the dickens does one do it? I'ts a recommendation before burning the ISO -to authenticate the Download.

Lastly, when I insert the Cd once windows has booted, it runs and gives option to install, without creating a partition!! Does that mean it will opt to dual boot automatically??

    Cheers....

Ubuntu has the option of installing itself as an "application" in the same partition you've got Windows running. It's advertised as being a bit slower, but less trouble. It's done using the WUBI installer, details here: http://wubi-installer.org/faq.php

Thanks but if it does not run from Cd won't the install be corrupt!!

The usual suspects are video settings. What kind of hardware are you attempting this on? Have you tried accessing the Live CD from within windows? The file is I believe wubi.exe on the disk accessable from Windows Explorer. ;)

Try live CD again and usually there is a key to press like F3 (you'll see the keys at the bottom) for more options. Choose VESA - that's video safe mode. I automatically do this to avoid the black screen.

I might also suggest that you look at PCLinux 2009.1, live CD but again, choose viseo safe mode when you boot up with it. It is the 3rd menu choice. You just press the down arrow twice to highlight it and then press enter.

    get the 2009.1 ISO

It is probably just the video/hardware. Most newer distro assume you have a video card. Most of my computers just have the chip on the motherboard so I usually just go the VESA route so I will have a display.

As far as the jerkiness, that's probably a mouse setting conflicting with the touchpad. If you decide to install, you can go in and tweak the settings a bit so scrolling will work smoother.
