    Hi

Just downloaded Thunderbird after using Outlook Express for years. the way I used Outlook was probably wrong, but I had the Bulk Mail as a sort of secondary account, whereby anything that landed in my inbox was important and anything in bulk mail wasn't necessarily spam, but stuff to deal with later.

Having gone to Thunderbird, it doesn't pick up any of my new or existing bulk mail at all.

I've tried altering the settings in tools>junk mail controls, but nothing shows. I have ticked to retrain it hoping that it will treat everything as legitimate mail and I can then alter my way of doing things, but no!

Any ideas, or I'm back to Outlook Express (as much as I'd hate to).

    Thanks

So no messages are being sent or received? Is that what you're saying? Have you configured it to connect to your mailserver(s)?

You can retrieve this information from Outlook Express by doing the following:

    1. Launch Outlook Express
    2. Select 'Accounts' from the 'Tools' menu
    3. On the 'Internet Accounts' dialog, select the 'Mail' tab
    4. Highlight your existing account with a single click
    5. Press the 'Properties' button
    6. On the mailserver properties dialog, select the 'Servers' tab

Here you should see the information that you should have specified in Mozilla Thunderbird.

Sorry Mada, not made myself clear. I am getting messages that would have normally gone into the inbox, but cannot get what would normally have gone into bulk.

    Thanks

Doing some reading up and could it be that the junk folder is being avoided and the emails being sent straight to "trash", although I can't see anything to do with a trash folder.

The email accounts I'm using Thunderbird for are both Hotmails.

I'd be grateful if anyone has any ideas how to get to see my junk mail, adjusted all settings that means I should , but it just isn't there.

    Inbox mail seems Ok.

When I migrated folders did it bring the rules with it and this is why?

    Thanks

I'm tying with Thunderbird again after failing last time to get it working correctly. It received inbox messages, but didn't pick up stuff that should have gone into the junk folder. I uninstalled it, used CCleaner and regseeker since last posting

I have installed it again and find that it has all the emails still saved from the last time I installed it and nothing after that time.

Hitting "Get Mail" did nothing and a couple of test emails revealed I could not send or receive.

I was sure I had set everything up Ok, but when I try to send an email I get the error message:

"The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server hotmail.com failed. thhe server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify your SMTP server setting is correct, or try again".

I'm completely lost, any help please as to how to get it working and why it had remembered its last setting on my computer.

    Thanks

Are you paying for your hotmail account?

iirc you have to pay for the service to use it in an email client.
There might be something for hotmail similar to ypops, but I don't know.

I've added the webmail extension and I confess I'm completely lost. I really wanted to start again, which is why I downloaded it again after I thought I had cleaned it off my system, but for some reason it remembered all my settings from my last attempt.

Okay, I just got my hotmail account to work I will tell you how I did it.

First make sure you have the extensions you need correctly installed.

    Go here:

    http://webmail.mozdev.org/installation.html

You need to install webmail and the hotmail extensions...

Right-click on the link "Web-Mail-1.0.15" and click "save link as" and save it into your Thunderbird extensions folder. Do this for the hotmail link also. Restart Thunderbird and install the extensions.

Now go to Tools>Extensions and double click on hotmail. Click add and type "hotmail.com" without quotations and click ok. Click ok again and double click on Webmail and make sure POP and SMTP have green lights. Go to Domain and check under POP and SMTP have hotmail.com under them. Now you can close the extensions window.

You can go here to get an account set up:
    http://webmail.mozdev.org/setup.html
Or here is you already set them up and need the server settings:
    http://webmail.mozdev.org/serversettings.html

    Post back with your results...

    Thanks for the response Cochese.

I uninstalled the webmail extensions I had already installed and reinstalled them. I also deleted the two hotmail accounts and created them again, checking all the settings matched.

Both accounts will now send emails, but only one will pick them up. Neither will pick up emails that were already in the Outlook Express inboxes, or mail that should go into the junk boxes.

Go to Tools>Account Settings and click on Server Settings for the account that isn't receiving. Make sure it is set up the same as the other account's server settings. It might just be that there are no new messages for that account. If you click the down arrow next to "Get Mail" and click the account, watch the bottom left corner. It will either say "there are no new messages on this server" or "server connection failed" or something similar. If it says "failed" we can go through your server settings.

Do you have you junk mail set up?

Go to Tools>Junk Mail Controls and choose what account you want to set up. If you check the box "Move incoming messages determined to be junk mail" and choose an account you will get a junk mail folder for that account.

I have never used OE so I am not sure if there is a way you can export/import messages between the two. If you still have all the messages in your account online, you could go into your hotmail account and mark all messages as "unread" and then go back into thunderbird and get all new messages. I haven't tried this, though.

Oh, try this. Go into thunderbird and go to Tools>Extensions and double click the hotmail extension. Under accounts go to POP and check/uncheck the boxes you want. I like to keep my messages unread on the server. This is a way for you to get all your messages.

EDIT: You may have to restart thunderbird after making changes.

Cochese, you managed to respond just before I posted that I had found the download junk checkbox in the webmail - hotmail extension.

I have been able to get all my messages now. and both accounts are sending and receiving email.

I guess now it is just a case of playing around with it.

Thanks very much for your help.
