New video card causing 100% cpu usage?

Ok, so second time coming here for help. Luckily its not virus's this time! If this is the wrong forum please let me know.

I just installed a Radeon HD 4800, replacing a HD 4550. I assume the 4800 is the better of the two. I run 4 gigs of ram in a 2.3 ghz quadcore, using windows seven. I was getting a pretty decent framerate in most games like World of Warcraft or League of Legends.

Now with this new card, I'm getting awful framerates and 100% cpu usage a lot of the time. When I run any game (or even youtube) it will pop up to 100% and stay there.

If I can provide any more information to help diagnose this and fix it please let me know.

 

Check in Device Manager that the 4800 is using AMD/ATI drivers - NOT the default or windows Update versions. What processes are the highest CPU% users?

If you're not sure, get the latest version directly from AMD, you don't need the CCC, try to get the drivers only. If you're using 64-bit W7, the drivers are here, click on the middle tab 'Individual packages', the drivers you need are the top ones.

Don't assume the 4800 is better though, the original AMD card was, I'm sure, once the retail/OEM makers pump them out, they they can alter them drastically, not always for the better.

 

I gotta say TY for the speedy reply! I actually just uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them and it works perfectly fine now! I think it just had a bad install. Kinda jumped the gun and posted up on here, but I'm just glad to have it fixed.

Just to let you know there has been a bug in the drivers released since version 10.10e that causes 99-100% GPU usage on HD Radeon cards. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. I've had it happen with my 5850. You can find older ATI drivers here www.guru3d.com .
