New Video Card, now sound has stopped

Dell XPS710, 5 years old
Windows 7
Creative X-Fi sound card

Did have dual 7950 GX, they finally gave up the ghost, not wanting to spend a fortune keeping the old girl going I just went and got an ASUS GeForce GT640.

It appeared to install without any errors, however, now sound is "fubar" if anything does come out at all, it is just scratchy interference type noise.

No conflicts showing in device manager, I am stuck as to what to try next. Have done a search but no thread seems quite the same as this one.

Any pointers most welcome, thanks.

 

See if the plug for the speakers somehow got dislodged from the sound card.I would also try earphones or another set of speakers to rule out the speakers. Make sure your sound card is the listed playback device and not HDMI if the sound card has a HDMI port. Try reseating the sound card.

Done all that, found nothing, nothing changed after re-seating in the same slot and a different slot.....

I am looking to find another sound card to remove this as a possible item before seeking a software fix.

Try MS fixit for sound. If that does not work reinstall the audio driver.

Edit: Not sure about your system, but if you uninstall the sound card, does the motherboard have a sound chip? If so, enable that onboard audio in BIOS and see if that works.

 

Found an Audigy 2 card in another PC and that installed and works fine.

So I have sound again:-D

OK so that proves speakers ok, now to establish whether the X-Fi card is knackered or whether it was just the clean install of the Audigy 2 drivers that sorted it...
