New Video Card Problems

I recently purchased an ATi 9600XT 256MB, when I attempted to replace my old All-In-Wonder 7500 with it I went to turn on the computer and the monitor no longer read that there was no video input, the fan on the card powered up and the computer started to boot, but I got no video output at all. I am wondering if this could be a problem because my PSU is not powerful enough or what the problem could be? I am on a student budget trying to troubleshoot this problem, but I absolutely want to make this card work.

Thank you for any help you can offer! I have been trying to troubleshoot this problem to no avail with friends. According to the ATi site, they recommend a minimum of a 300W PSU for 9500-9700 series cards, they also say that the system may beep and fail to boot if the card is not properly connected to the power supply, however the 9600XT does not have a 4-prong connector to connect to the power supply.

    Thank you very much!

*crossing fingers it can be worked out*

    System Specs:
    ASUS A7N266-C
    AMD AthlonXP 2000+

    PCI USB Card
    PCI 10/100 NIC
ATi Radeon 9600XT 256MB (if I can make it work)

Make sure that the card is properly seated. do a re-check. From what I understand with changing video cards you should uninstall the drivers for the card you had in there first. Then install the card and the new drivers. Hope this helps and welcome to major geeks! not sure about the ps.

drivers don't have anything to do with it at this point, he'd still get the post screen on the monitor.

and no, it would not be the psu. if the psu were not enough it would try to boot and die immidiately, then you'd have to pull the power cord and wait around 5-10 sec before trying again, with the same results. or the computer would start as normal and at some point (usually when you start loading stuff in win or at startup) it'd die on you doing the same thing. the psu is quite easy to recognize since it's the only thing you'd have to pull the plug on to make the computer boot again.

my guess is that the mobo settings are incorrect, so just swap back your old card, enter bios and load 'failsafe settings', then swap back and try again. if it works you should go back into bios and check so that cpu speed and the harddrive(s) and cdrom etc are ok. if you're unsure of these things the easiest would be to write them all down, then when re-entering the values go page by page, rebooting in between to make sure some setting isn't disabling your card again.

try that first, if it doesn't work head back here with your results and post again.

It may not be his problem but what you are saying the having drivers for both video cards is correct..

No that's not what I'm saying. I just think we should leave the drivers be for a second and get his post show first.

Go into the motherboard bios on startup normally holding down the DEL key and change the display ssetting to AGP as first display.

Try that 1st if not ask again

That would work if his old card was a PCI

I have 9600xt and a compaq s700 monitor that will not work, same thing no video input soon as I turn on the monitor. I wish I could use this monitor cause it is 17 inch, so if anyone has any ideas. Was going to start a thread but don't have to now.

Try a different monitor, I have tryed 3 or 4 different monitors and they all work except that compaq.

You still get post screen with the compaq one? If so, start in safe mode, change the refresh rate for every resolution, also set color depth low as hell, then reboot in normal mode. You should be able to log in and make your changes then, this time you won't have to worry about settings being more than the monitor can handle.

No it ain't that, the monitor when pluged in to the computer and powerd on says no video input then if I power on the computer it says the same no post or anything just like if it was not connected to the computer at all. I use the monitor on other computers and its fine it seems just this card or computer.

    Thanks but any other ideas?
