New WD 160gb hdd installation

Ok recently i bought a new harddrive - western digital sata150 160gb
i tried to install it today and its not working. tried differnt jumper settings and that didn't seem to help

i need to install xp pro on it but everytime i try it says it can't find a harddrive - idk if its the jumpers or what but idk what to do

System - VIA k7 mobo
1 gb ram
350 power
current harddrive 20gb seagate ide

please help

 

Hard to say. Double check the cable connections on the motherboard and on the harddrive . . . also make sure the sata power plug is inserted all the way. If it uses the molex plug (some do) make sure it is plugged in all the way - also try a different molex just to be sure (I once had a molex plug "drop" one of it's pins . . . it pushed backwards out of the plug and wasn't making contact).

If this is the only harddrive in your system, you should set the jumper pin to "Master" Or "cable select" if master doesn't seem to work.

Check in your bios and try and have it "find" the drive. See if there is an "auto" setting for this function, and make sure it is selected. Also in bios, see if there is a "clear CMOS" function and, if there, enable it. Also, see what kind of settings there are in bios for SATA drives - maybe (since it had a pata drive before, you need to "enable" sata).

These are all problems I have dealt with when installing a new hard drive.
