Hi, I just bought a new Caviar Blue 500gb AAKS-SY (from Tiger Direct). I also bought a Masscool CV-100 SATA to IDE board as I have an older IDE motherboard. They said it should just hook up with no problems.....:smileyhappy:

My BIOS is recognizing the Caviar as being there as Primary Drive. I have the computer booting from CD so I can install XP Pro onto this drive. But the XP Install says there is no hard drive detected.

Also I have the Lifeguard Tools download and it says there is no hard drive detected.

I know I am probably missing a most elemental detail, but can you please give me the proper steps to get this running? I have a smaller Maxtor 4.3 gb drive (using it as emergency due to a larger drive crashing.) But on the mboard I have the IDE slot for system board (connected to DVD/CD drive) and the slot with the Masscool adapter (connected to the new drive) So I don't think I can boot into the 4.3 and still have the 500 hooked up.

I can provide pics of the BIOS pages as I have them set up, as well as pics of how it all is connected to mboard.

No one at the WD forum has replied and I'm getting frustrated (just a little anyway)

    Computer: Gateway 700 SL Series

    Motherboard: Intel Garibaldi D850GB

    OS: XP Pro SP2

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP!!!

    Greetings, kc7brown.

XP does not carry native support for SATA, so it's possible that even though the drive is recognized by BIOS, the XP install won't see it.

Does the machine have a floppy drive? If so, there should be a way to load the SATA drivers during the XP install (it's been a while, but I think it was <F6>).

If not, what you're probably going to have to do is slipstream a copy of your XP disk with the SATA drivers that should be supplied with the drive, using a program called nLite. The program is provided for download here at MG, but I pointed you to the nLite site because there are various guides for slipstreaming there.

Thanks Caliban!!! That makes sense as the drive did not come with drivers, just OEM type packaging. I will make a fresh start in the morning. It is no problem to slipstream with the SATA drivers as I have made slipstream disks before.

I will post tomorrow if it went well, or not.

    :-D

Hello Caliban, Do you mean the drivers for the hard drive? It came in OEM packaging, therefore no software at all.

My current BIOS is dated from 2001 I think, so there must be an updated version if needed.

And I've had no luck getting drivers from WDigital. They have the Lifeguard Tools, but when I run it I get "no hard drive detected". Probably because the darn thing isn't installed...LOL

    Here's more info:

    Chipset: Intel Tehama i850
    MB: Garibaldi
    BIOS: AMI GB85010A.15A.0046.P13.0108201551

No - you would need any SATA / RAID drivers for the Garibaldi board, and I'm having some difficulty finding any.

    Still searching.

There is a BIOS update for that board, located here - you might try installing that, see if that changes anything (you should be able to run the package through Windows).

I have a webpage bookmarked where someone had a 300gb drive with the P13 BIOS, and upgrading to P18 worked.

So with my small drive installed I can go ahead and update to the BIOS you found. Shut down. Install new drive, reboot from XP and it should go okay?

Reason I ask is that I borrowed the small drive and plan to return it as soon as I get the new one installed. So I need to set the new one up/format/etc without using the small one.

I do have XP Pro SP2 to install from.

    You are the best!!!:drool

UGH, it said "invalid for system".... Probably due to it being made for Gateway? And they are NO help.

    Hi,

I'm not sure about this but it seems to me the purpose of the CV-100 is to make a SATA drive work like an IDE drive. So no drivers necessary.

My guess is the card is not working properly or is incompatible with your setup. Are you certain the drive is connected properly and is getting a power connection (I don't know what the cables look like)?

May I ask why you chose a SATA HD for this computer?

Well the BIOS does recognize the drive, it's just that XP Install does not.

Reason for switching is that I had two 80gb IDE drives, and over time both drives crashed. I borrowed a small 4.3gb to use until getting another drive.

Since I will be upgrading to a newer computer eventually I thought buying a SATA drive now would get me a headstart.

But now I've found No-OS barebones for around $140, including the same darn drive I just bought from Tiger Direct!

If I don't get this going I will just return it and get the new computer.

You're right about Gateway support - very confusing. I can't even find the 700 SL - found the 700 series, but the chipset d/l for that shows the i915G, not the i850.

You could try the INF Update Utility, but I don't know if that, too, will be blocked by the Gateway code.

Starting to agree with you and sach2 - this might turn out to be an exercise in futility. At least you've got a brand new Caviar Blue you can build a system around. ;)

Take one more look at your connections. You have two IDE connections on the motherboard. One should be marked Primary/0 or harddrive and one should be marked Secondary1 or CDROM.

I'm not exactly sure how that card works but I guess it plugs into one of the motherboard IDE connectors. Make sure you have the card attached to the primary/0 connection.

There are 3 (that I'm seeing) IDE slots. The DVD is plugged into the slot for System Board. The other one is where I have the adapter/sata. The 3rd is the A: drive.

I will look again though. I have not yet tried to slipstream a CD with the drivers. I did find Intel Sata drivers and am trying to build the CD now.

Thanks!!! I will let you know what happens....:confused

The card should be in the black IDE slot. You only have two one white and one black. The third smaller connecter is something else.

You may very well already have it in that slot, I'm just throwing one last ditch effort out there.

Question: To use nLite to slipstream.... I have SP3 (exe file) downloaded, and I have the Intel Sata Drivers downloaded. On nLite I just click the boxes to integrate Service Pack, Drivers, and Bootable to create the slipstreamed disk?

On the slots: The way I hooked up the new drive was by unplugging the current one and plugging in the Masscool adapter (with power and sata of course). Since I could boot into the old drive I was thinking that would work.

If I can't get the slipstreamed disk to work... My sister has a copy of Vista - will that contain the sata drivers? Of course, if my computer will run Vista....

I really don't know. Vista will have SATA drivers on the disc but I'm wondering if it is SATA drivers being the problem or whether it is the card needing some kind of generic plug n play driver that isn't loaded by an installation disc and is only present in a fully functioning OS.

You can get a free copy of the Vista Recovery disc if you use a torrent program to download it. That would allow you to see if a Vista disc will see the drive. [The recovery disc is the installation disc with all the installation files stripped out. It is equivalent to XP's recovery console]

I have a Vista Recovery Disk that I made for her laptop installation! I can check that too. Right now I am using nLite to try to build a disk with SP3 and drivers.

AscendTech has a "build it" system where you can choose the processor type and build the rest around it. Processor speed will not be a major point, as I don't do alot of high speed gaming, etc. My current computer is fast enough. And some of their computers come with the same Caviar Blue that I have. They said they would also discount some if I order without the hard drive, therefore I could add extra memory instead.

If I go with a new system (and really I need to eventually, so may as well do it now) - I can either get a credit from Tiger Direct on return... Or I have a friend whose son runs a computer business who may just buy this drive. The dad has bought parts from me before...

It just annoys me that Gateway don't want to support older products, and Intel is just about as bad. I'd MUCH rather deal with people like you guys who actually CARE and are willing to help. I try to help people and work on their computers as it keeps my mind in "computer mode"....:-D

XP Install (slipstreamed w/SP3 and drivers) says Windows already has the drivers. Also when loading files, there are alot of RAID and SCSI drivers that load.

Here's my BIOS settings (P13): How it is set when I boot up normally with the installed 4.3gb drive

    Advanced Tab:
