I'm having a problem with my daughters older computer. It has XP. It had sat unconnected for about a year, now we've set it up and I downloaded Outpost firewall, CW Shredder, CCleaner, A-squared, Spybot, AdAware, and Super Anti Spyware Professional trial version. It all ready had AVG free in it. Ran all the scans, cleaned it right out, and now when I click on a link on a web page or e-mail that opens a new window, the new window remains blank, it just says at the top "internet explorer provided by (my internet provider)", it's not making the connection to the web site I try to go to. However if I type in an address the new window goes to it no problem. This was working properly (but very slowly) prior to running all the scans. Can anyone help?
    Thank you!

Try this ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ It's a little program called IEfix and it will repair Internet Explorer by reloading the original files. You'll need the Windows XP CD. When you run the program, it'll come up saying that it cannot find a file. When that happens, point it to the 'I386' folder on the CD. It will run fine from there. If this doesn't work, post back, and we'll go to step 2.

We don't have the Windows CD, both of our computers came pre-loaded.

If the PC has a 2nd partition on the hard drive (most pre-loaded PC's do) it is probably the 'Recovery' partition and contains the system files needed to reload windows. If you have this partition, look at it and see if there's an I386 folder... if so, use that with IEfix....

How do I check for the partition etc? Sorry but I am not real computer savvy, what path do I follow?

Go into My Computer. If it shows two drives under 'Hard Disk Drives' then one of them is most likely the recovery partiton; you'll see drive C: and (if it's there) the recovery partition will probably be drive D:. Double click the recovery partition and see if the I386 folder is there. If it is, download and run IEfix and follow the steps I posted above if (and when) you get the error saying that it can't find a file..... and if you don't have the I386 folder or the recovery partition, we'll find some other fixes for you.....

Thank you for all your suggestions, I managed to fix it myself. I went to the microsoft website and downloaded and installed the IE6 update, rebooted, and it works great now!
