Cindy found these at the local thrift store for 6 bucks!.....they look very very new, and only lack a 12 volt adapter.

My question is, are all adapters created equal? I'm not sure what input or output to get, and I'm pretty sure I burned out a component of few years back by plugging in the wrong adapter, so before I make that mistake again and ruin these really nice headphones, can someone give me some advice?
    Thanks friends!

most products have some information on what to use near the adapter hole, it should say something like DC12v 1A so check taht first, i really don't think there is a difference in brands of adaptor, just the voltage and amps AC or DC

So your looking at 12 volts 200 mA. At Radio shack they have universal adapters for about $10-$15. They also have them at Best Buy for about the same price. Just get one that is 300 mA (I think at Best Buy they have them in 300 and 500 mA). There will be a selector switch that will allow you to adjust for voltage, and it will automatically adjust for current. Just make sure you follow the directions.

In fact, I just bought one at Best Buy last week, and it just so happens to be a Jensen. It is 300 mA, adjustable to 12 volts. This is the exact one you'll want. Can't seem to find a model # on it, but it's white, and I found it in the home audio section near audio cables.

    12 volts according to...

    http://gizmos2go.com/xcart/customer/product.php?productid=2675

    and...

    http://www.epinions.com/content_119482125956
In either case, if you get the adapter that I mentioned, it will allow you to change the voltage if necessary. You can start with 6, and if that doesn't work, well than you know it's 12.

Sometimes people will calculate the input voltage my multiplying the number of batteries required by their voltage, but that isn't always the case.

There seems to be contradictory information about the power requirements. I think the information that evilevets posted looks more reliable.

As another post suggested, try to see if the voltage requirement is stamped somewhere on transmitter/base.

Well thanks everyone! :) I think I have enough info to get what I need and not burn it up! Then, it's just a matter of whether or not it works! :)
    Here's hopin!

If they're infra-red, then they are crap.

Infra-red has to be in line-of-sight with the transmitter, with no obstructions and is very sensitive to interference.

Still, for six bucks you can't complain.

Must be worth at least $50 on eBay. :)

Eric, also pay attention to the polarity. Most adaptors use center pin positive, outer ring negative, but some are the reverse. And unless the component has a blocking diode to protect against reverse voltage, going the wrong way might fry it. Some jacks have a small diagram next to the jack showing polarity, but lots don't. Most all of the universal adapters allow you to change polarity, usually by rotating the plug 180 degrees in its socket, but watch out for it before trying it.

They are 900mhz, so I can go all over town and still get a signal.....well, at least 150 feet away, and room to room. :)

That's pretty good then, especially for $6!

You could have at least bought me one as well?

I have an RCA set I got for christmas last year. I like 'em. I find the input needs to be very low from the amplifier, and on occasion I'll get a brief blast of interference. I've been unable to isolate it but my neighbour is a radio operator, which could be a factor.

The Headphones Rock! Got a Jensen power adapter and set it all up, and it's just dandy. We scored.

I see you've already figured out what ya need. So, I'll just say congrats, bud on a great deal. :) Those Jensen headphones are pretty good, actually, and for six bucks, you're laughing!

Yeah, I'm never too proud to go to thrift shops and flea markets and places like that. Get some dirt-cheap deals - sometimes stuff I can't buy anywhere else. When I'm not buying, I'm donating computers, electronic gear, or whatever else someone might be able to use. Better than it going to the dump and being wasted.

I love going to Thrift stores. Our pastor calls it reverse snobbery: "Look what I got, and I only paid 2.00 for it!" "Yeah? Well, I got this for fifty cents!" :D :D :D

Boy.......I'll tell ya Eric.......you wanna hear some headphones, shell out close to a hundred bucks for the Koss Pro4AA Titanium Professional headphones. They rattle your bones !! Downside........they are HEAVY. V E R Y heavy. I never dreamed a headphone could pound out bass like they do.

  20. eclayton

    eclayton Sgt. Shorts-cough

Hmm, 6 bucks, plus 13 for the adapter, or 100 bucks.....:D

    WOAH...........Now wait just a bloody second !!! Where the heck am i ???? I THOUGHT I was at a GEEK site ????
Let's make ONE THING perfectly clear Eric.........money is NO object when it comes to techy items !! Other things like food in the fridge, and shingles on the roof, tires for the car, clothing, can be skimped on. But techie items???????? Oh man. Let's get our priorities straight dude. Hahahahaha

I am ashamed of myself. (hangs head, walks over to head phones, stomps on them, takes sharp jagged pieces of now broken headphones and shoves them under each of 10 toenails. Walks back over to computer, sends private message to "Father Brian" to "meet me in the confessional" and proceeds to confess: "Forgive me, it's been quite sometime since my last confession. I've been listening to cheap headphones, but I shoved the broken shards under my toenails as penance"....Gets forgiveness, walks back to computer, and Googles Koss Pro4AA Titanium Professional headphones, writes down store names and addresses, gets in car, goes to store, buys headphones......

You don't have to go THAT far. Say 10 Hail Majors and do 25 ferrite beads (geek version of prayer beads). That's penance enough. :D

Yeah.......No kiddin. But you see what happens when someone listens to headphones that don't satisfy??? They go off the deep end !! LOL

I used to have a pair of wireless headphones. They were IR ones. They died a very painful death when they metamorphasised into an interesting adittion for a lego mindstorms robot :p

Sony power adaptors are really silly - they reverse the polarity and they make dang sure that if you plug an adaptor with incorrect polarity the entire device breaks beyond repair. Instead of just fusing something. You gotta be real careful!

A lot of Panasonic adaptors reverse the polarity also. My destroyed cordless phone is testament to that.
