I am new. I am sorry if I am not posting this int he right place. I am really bad with computer stuff and websites, so I appologize. I am currently deleting old Java programs like it says in read and run me first. I have downloaded and saved the new version of Java and am about to reboot and install it. My question is, once I do that, do I then remove the file from where I saved it?(Which was on my desktop.) I am sorry if it is a dumb question.

You don't need to, but you can and it will not harm anything.

You will find it beneficial to have a folder to specifically download files to rather than your desktop. Create a folder in your C drive called Downloads, and point your browser to download to this fodler, not your desktop. If you aren't sure how to do this, let us know what browser you use e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox etc, and we can tell you how.

Hiya: Come to think of it, I have several old-ish Java downloads on this box. Are they needed (supposedly) to run older programs? The Java site is not particularly helpful.
    Regards all

They are probably just your old java .exe downloads, so you would no longer require them. If you are at all uncertain post up the filenames here before deleting and someone will advise you.

    You guys are quick!
    OK, taking a deep breath:
Under ctrl panel: icon "Java Control Panel"
    and: icon "plugin 1.4.0_01"

    Going down one level=
    Some Java Runtime Settings:
    1.6.0_02
    1.6.0_03
    1.6.0_05
    1.5.0_06

    Also Java runtime Versions :
    1.4.2-beta
    1.4.0_01
    1.6.0_05
    1.5.0_06
    1.6.0_03
    1.6.0_02
    Cntrl Panel>Add/Remove:

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 update 6 145 mb
Java 2 Runtime Environment SE v1.4.0_01 1.6 mb
    Java 2 " " " " SE v1.4.2 60.6 mb
    Java Web Start 1.75 mb
    Java 6 update 2 133.mb
    Java 6 " 3 133.mb
    Java 6 " 5 136.mb

I have a feeling this is legacy stuff from my son who is taking computer science. The ungrateful lad should maybe have deleted some of the above?
A bit too much for this old hardrive no?
Many thanks, can hardly wait for your reply.

The only version of Java Runtime you need is 1.6.0_05 - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 update 6. This is the more current version.

Any others you can uninstall. To completely uninstall, use the uninstall feature via the
Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs menu. The use a cleaner like CCleaner
to clean up afterwards. Use first the Cleaner feature, and then the Registry cleaner feature, ensuring you make a registry back up when prompted.

If you are uncertain of using this software, let us know and we can walk you through.
