A devastating Earthquake hit Christchurch (Capital city of the South Island) at lunchtime today (1pm NZ time) about 5 hours ago.

First of all. 1 dead. Then 17 dead. Then 65 dead. And more bad news to come. It could hardly have hit at a worst time. Lunch time on a working day. :cry

Christchurch was a city with beautiful old buildings including the iconic Christchurch cathedral, now with the central business area virtually reduced to rubble.

I have had 5 trips to the South Island and really feel for the South Islanders, and all New Zealanders.

There are many thousands of New Zealanders living in Australia ,and they will be worried sick about their relatives.
NZ is a favourite holiday destination for lots of Australians and most visit the South Island, especially to go to Christchurch to see the Cathedral.

The Cathedral has the same importance to New Zealanders as the Opera House has to Sydney.

I hope the death toll does not rise too much further, but I suspect it will. :cry

Yes, up to a few hundred unaccounted for last I head. It has devastated a lot of historic buildings, too. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of the earthquake and their families.
