I was given a pc with XP Pro ver 2002 SP3, Pentium 4, 768 MB RAM. It had no security software, not having much exp. with geeky stuff, I went with MS Security Essentials. BTW, I have heard that MS is so top-heavy that they can't keep up with user security needs. Fortunately, I heard of MajorGeeks.com and so far have installed Malwarebytes, Cleanup, and Revo Uninstaller 1.90, but my MAIN question is: what does anybody know about AVG av? Many thanks!:cool:dood

AVG lately has become about as bad as Norton. I would suggest you keep MMSE.

    And welcome to MG's!!! ;)

mse is great but real time protection can bog the pc down as it reads the site before it loads it into the brouser. I turn it off most of the time only when i am doing dangrious searchs for stuff you wouldnt want your kids or wife to know about do i turn it on. in addition i have disabled all of the java software i can find as this is unsecure and most of the problems ive had in the past were java web based hackers trying to build a back door for remote access.
also takes a little time at boot to do a quick scan so if your trying to quick boot and access somthing you get stuck waiting about 3 mins for that at boot.
    but it updates every day.
This was the windows live care security engine which is dressed down without the firewall and other things onecare had. I miss them it made access to the fire wall and changing settings easer for me at the time .
been using it for 3 years .

Disabling java is not necessary, as many websites wont work with out it, just make sure its updated when it needs it.

I disagree with that. I have removed Java from 4 of the 5 windows partitions on the computer in my home. So far, I have discovered one site that needs java. Maybe I'm just not going to the sites that depend heavily on java.
Javascript, on the other hand is needed at a lot of sites to see things properly. I use noscript so I can enable exactly what I want at sites I go to.
