I know I can connect two computers with a crossover but can I share an internet connection like this(dsl)? If so do both computers have to be on.
Or does it only work with a router?
What is the cheapest and best set-up for a home 2 computer set-up

Life would be easier if you used a router-- they've gotten pretty cheap these days. WIth two PCs connected by a crossover cable, you could use Windows ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on one machine that uses a dialup modem to connect to the internet to allow internet access to both PCs. If you have broadband, you would either need a USB connected modem, or a second ethernet card in the machine running ICS to connect to an ethernet-connected modem.

Sure can. For WinXP/2k: On the host computer, Open up the Network Connection properties for the Internet connection. There should be a sharing tab. Check this, and your system will automatically configure the LAN adapter to 192.168.0.1, and make all the other nexessary changes. On the client PC, set IP address and DNS to auto.

Routers are nice because you don't need to have the host powered on for the client to connect. Additionally, you don't expose your computer to the Internet directly with a router.

The way you have it set up is generally cheaper (generally you just need a second NIC and a crossover cable) however, I'd argue that a home router is probably the best. You can pick them up fairly cheap at Wal-Mart or Staples. I prefer Netgear and Linksys, but have also had success with D-Link. Besides, if you ever plan on adding a 3rd computer, the router makes life much easier.
