I am new here and can't seem to find any answers to my particular problem.
My computer freezes up totally, neither the mouse nor the keyboard will work. If I restart the computer it works fine for a little while and then freezes again. Any suggestions?

    Hi

    What windows version you using?

What are you doing when it freezes, which programs or is it random?

Is it a laptop or desktop? if laptop what surface is it placed on?

Does it sound as if the cooling fans are working overtime?

Random freezes could be caused by overheating so make sure all the cooling grills and the insisde of the PC is clean from dust etc.

If you get any error messages what are they?

I'm using XP Pro,the freezes are random,it is a desk top, and I have vaccumed the fan areas on the outside. My next step was to open it up and make sure the inside is clean, but I haven't done that.I don't get any error messages.
    Thanks for your response.

I have seen random lockup caused by faulty hard drives too. Find out which company made your hard drive (Seagate, Western Digital, Hitachi are the big 3; Samsung makes desktop drives too, but they aren't very common; if the PC is older, you may have a Quantum/Maxtor drive, if it's really old it might be a Fujitsu but they haven't made desktop drives in a long time). Then go to their web site, find their downloads page, and get their diagnostic utility. It will usually create a bootable CD or floppy; boot to the disc and run the in depth extended tests. If you're tests come back showing errors, back up any important data ASAP and get a new drive.... if the test reveal the drive is healthy, post here and we'll try a different route.

BTW- have you looked in the Event Viewer for any errors/warnings whose times coincide with the freeze-ups? Right click My Computer, click Manage, click Event Viewer, click System and scroll through the right pane looking for errors and warnings. Post any errors that occured at the same time as the lock ups and we'll do what we can ;)

    Keep us posted!
