newbie...xp startup problem

    First of all, I have an older Acer Travelmate that was donated without any of the system cds. It is having trouble starting up, I think it must be a virus. I can start it in safe mode. I have an antivirus, but it isn't installed. What can I do from safe mode to fix this? I have tried a recovery but that didn't help.
